Subject: help to buy an new sax !

hi !!
i've been practising the saxophone (ALTO) for now 6 years, and i'd like to buy an new alto sax, but i don't know anything about prices etc...
I've been proposed an old Selmer MARK 7 (1985) for 1600 € (about 1900 $), which has been renovated etc..
And a selmer II nd serie SuperAction 80 (1988) for 1700 €, which is also in a good state
Do you think they are good offers ?? Which one should I buy ?? I'd like a good sax, not exceptionnal, but which could last long. Is it ok even if it's already very old ??
Thanx in advance !

that Mark VII is ok....

dun go for Series I....

go for Series II will also be a nice option for you...depends which one's feeling you like...

and better check the Mark VII carefully to see any inborn defects....

must also point out.....Selmer isnt the only reputable sax producer......are u in US? I guess u have much wider options than those 3...

I would prefer Seris II, although the super action 80 my teacher has sounds very awesome. I don't like Mark VII as much though, the sound is a little weak to me.

I would suggest u to try out each of them. Be sure to check the intonation.

First, tune the mid F# to A 440. Than check how flat the open c# is and how sharp the Mid D and high C# is. Afterward, check the low B and Bb.

Every sax has its own character. It is very difficult to make comments according to your brief description for both saxes. It seems the prices you mentioned are very similar.

I may suggest you to do "blind" test with your friend or teacher who know about saxes to see which sound generated from them that you like before you make the decision.

Besides of sound testing, it is better that you try on both saxes to feel the difference of both.

Good luck
