ill tell you that if you want to avoid frustrations with less than perfect saxophones, buy a pro sax as new as possible older saxes might have air leaks that will frustrate you.... ,it will save you a lot of frustration specially if you are a student theres nothing better than getting a good saxophone one that is easy to play and sounds good, most student saxes sound cheap, learning to play the sax is the same as learning to drive, you can choose to learn on a 5spd or learn on an automatic wouldnt you rather learn in an automatic???see my point???theres lots of pro saxes out there that are not expensive, spend a little more its worth it.ohh and choose the right mouth piece there seems to be mouth pieces that work better than others the openness of the mouth piece is just as important more opennes means more air that goes thru, and are easier to blow on,the closed mouth pieces are harder to play i started on ricos and personally i hate ricos, never worked on me then i switched to a selmer C,as far as reeds the vandorens seem to work best specially the javas, which add a beautifull tone.
the higher the number of the reed the harder it is to play i use 2 1/2.very low numbers have more response but tend to squeek(or maybe it was my sax [or me??]:) because they are too thin.

I am a sax tutor, I agree with what richardsinla said, it just like to buy a car for the beginners, if you are the beginner, I suggest you
(1)get a new horn instead of a vinatge horn, you have no experience to know how leak the old horn is, besides, a beginner will blow it terrible on any horn, Selmer is meaningless to you at this moment. You won't buy a Ferrari when you just get the license, it just like suicide. Don't you?
(2)Just buy a new horn between the price $6000-8000, brand: you can choose Yamaha or Unison, both are good to you at this moment, the pro brandmark like Selmer, Yanagisawa or Keilwerth are too good to you, you can't handle it well, I am sure of that. About the reeds, use 1 or 1 1/2, the larger the no. of reed, will find it more difficult to blow, but sounds more sustantial and wonderful, you'd better use small no. reed, it's easier to blow.
By the way, I use 3 1/2 or 4 when I play both classical and jazz. I use Yanagisawa 901 for many years, and I teach sax too.
