Subject: What is your best setup?

Hi guys.....enough about that SC or Kenny stuff......let's move on..........

What is your best setup so far....no matter alto, tenor, soprano, or baritone......what combination works best for you.....please state the style of your sound and other things as well.......

my one first....

I am mostly satisfied with my current 5 digit Mark VI alto (delacquered) with a Selmer short shank sololist B* HR mpc....reed is vandoren 3 classical reed....Francois Louis Ligature......

I think short shank sololist is the best mpc I ever played.....very centered tone...and clear...B* opening was quite small for me when I use the BG standard ligature......but once I switched to Francois Louis it is fine for me.....

The sound....I play mostly classical pieces....now working on Glazunov's Concerto for Saxophone...I don't see the sound is very dark....but I think I managed to immitate Marcel Mule's sound....on the other hand, I occassionally play a few jazz tunes....I make it quite bright....

let's share our thoughts

I particularly like my C** metal selmer alto mpc.....very good for classical......

my other Selmer Jazz metal Tenor piece is also very good...

I tried Yanagisawas mpc at professional music before....don;t really like it..

Joe,
I think your mpc must be great because I do want to get a bigger opening mpc....at least a C*......but I tried an E SS sololist.....it is too wide for me....

Whatever:

I've played Selmer C* rubber mouthpiece when it come with my Serie 3 Alto. It's too close for me. Then I use a D rubber (both not soloist). But I can't find different between C* and D rubber. The D soloist was follow my mark 6 which buy from an American. t's fit for me. I checked Ebay and found a D soloist is selling around $1500-$2000-HKD.

I tried Lebayle once....but dun really like it....maybe due to lack of tme put into that mpc....

and I dun like current Selmers either....
but anyway I think better stick to a mpc that you feels comfortable, not necessary to be the best one....you should work with the mpc and get used to it....so this time I came back to UK, I just brought my Selmer B* with me..LOL

Joe,
I always want to go to USA to buy some saxes....any suggestions on how to find out estate sales???

and anyone knows where about in France has the most sax shops?

thx

Selmer seris II Alto (Silver), Selmer Larry Teal mpc, Optimum Ligature, Vandoren 3.5 or Rico Grand Concert 3.5. I usually work on my reeds, so I have no idea what's the real thickness is.

A little comment about my seris II. I think it has a very sweet sound compare to seris III. It's open C# is very flat at the same time the high D is sharp, which is very annoying even though I am used to it.

My mpc is selmer Larry Teal, which is not very common used in HK. It's invented by one of the well-known teacher in the USA whose named Larry Teal. Its tip opening is smaller than C* but the facing is longer, the chamber round instead or square, which somehow raise the pitch my open C* a bit. However, the LT mpc isn't very alttissmo friendly, unless you really put your time in it or LT fits u well.

Yea, the selmer mpcs in these 10 years aren't good, unless u really try each of them in the shop out, you may find a good one. I tried Vandoren AL3 and AL4 and read some US forum discussion abt them. It's said that Vandoren Opitimum mpcs are better than most selmer C*, unless you are very lucky to find a nice C*.

Optimum Ligature - Um, it's not much abt this lig. It's good. Big but rather bright sound compare Francois Louis. I haven't tried it, but it seems it has a darker and smaller sound.

Reeds- Rico Grand Concert for saxophone isn't availible in HK yet, but I have bought a few boxes back to HK to my buddies, they all like it. However, it's quality is very unstable, so I have been switching between it and Vandoren once a while. I work on my reeds so, either brand doesn't make too much of a difference to me.

Im studying in the USA, so my repertories are very different.

I am re-working on Ibert, polishing Desenclos' Prelude, Candece, finale, Creston Concerto for my recital. The new piece that Im adding Dahl concerto and Dubios Concerto to my repertories. My teacher is making me to play the David Maslanka's Sonata, it's published by The North American Saxophone Alliance. www.saxalliance.org It's a very nice piece, u can find the recording on amazon.com

There are many pieces are great and well-known in here same as Classical players but not really in HK. For example, Rueff's Chanson et Passpied, Fischer Tull Sarabande and gigue, Bozza Improvisation et caprice, Tomasi Ballade, Muczynski Sonata, Hindemith Sonata, Absil Sonate, Denisov Deux Piece, Husa Elegie et Rondeau and Cocncerto, Koch Concerto and etc. Players like Kenneth Tse
, Dale Underwood, Debra Richtmeyer, are all great.

If you need any information, email me. I am happy to make friends.

However, I have given up jazz two and a half years ago and only focusing on Classical now. Shame on me..
