Thank you for your reply anyway, Whatever.

Are you Desmond's fans? Do you know Mouthpiece and alto saxophone does he use?

Thank you, indeed.

Hi Joblim,

Yes, I do listen to Paul Desmond's CDs....especially when it is rainning....lol

his mouthpiece should be a McGregory.....around $350USD

for saxophone, I read that he uses Mark VI....however..saw from the cover of one of his transcription books....I recognise that it is a Super Balance action....and also the mouthpiece, on that book seems very much a Selmer Airflow to me....it is the earliest mouthpiece Selmer made...

I have a very small openning one...and it indeed soundsmore Desmond like....the sound is more soft and the intensity seems to be only in the middle of the tone...I think it is actually pretty weak at the outside of each tone....so it really is more Desmond to me....

this is what I think only...and I use my terms to discrib the things...so hope you understand...I havent played a McGregory....but hunting for one on Ebay...

Thank you very much for sharing your observation and what you know with me, whatever. It is invaluable to me!

Although I am quite new in playing sax (for 1.5 years), I have been trying to imitate Paul Desmond. Of course, not quite successfully like you do la! I think I need to source a good MP that help me play my sound more closer to Desmond. I especially like his soft, tenderness. I am still trying to manipulate my high notes and control it not to be too sharp.

Lately, quite frustrating with my current MP (vandorem v25)and reed (vandorem v16 #3). Maybe I need to find a substitute to help me sound more like Desmond. Do you have any good tresurable for me? At my current stage of still looking for my personal "voice" in sax, I really need your advice ah.

Thank you for your opinion.

I bought a Yani soprano weeks ago and it came with a S25 mpc....not bad....but just a bit too ordinary or normal...

dont be frustrated, I think your saxophone probably is a beginner one, I am not saying it is bad....I actually like YAS100 very much.....I think saxophone will matter when it comes to crafting one's sound....

like my 5 Digit Mark VI, when comparing to my Series II alto....the sound from Selmer series II is more fuller even if you blow into it bery lightly.....but for Mark VI it is not....it is not....I have to change the mouth capacity and little bit of throat to put it into a Series II way....

so the difference is that...I feel and like my Mark VI because I can do various changes to make my sound....many saying that "...a Mark VI sounds more like myself..." I think this should be a Mark VI helps me to sound more like myself.....but I never say that you should go and buy a Mark VI....don't buy it before you have enough experience on playing a bunch of different saxes....

to be exact my Airflow mpc mentioned above came with a Selmer Model 26 alto....that alto has a great characteristics in itself, but putting on the mpc, it sounds more awesome....anyway I traded it with Pluto for a Mark VII....

maybe many other vintage or Modern saxes can do what a Mark VI does........

and mpc is so important as well...the Airflow one sometimes goes cheap sometimes not so cheap....but should be able to get it around 120USD....maybe..

if u go to woodwind and brass wind website... wwbs.com
they have a mpc called NETE and is said to be made to immitate desmond...and in one of the report done by a Japanese guy, he really sound like a Desmond....cool...but I loose that link...it has 598kb.. if u want I can send it to u...

I am trying to get a MC Gregory mpc...350USD....hope it will be nice..

:D

Dear whatever

Thank you for your advice. I really have got a right person answering my questions.

It seems I have to look for a mpc that I feel comfortable and at the same time help me express my innerself of "desmond". You are definitely right, before I switch from my student model alto sax to a vintage good one, I should learn to feel the difference. my target is in one year, I will change to a more professional model, like a Selmer Mark Vi which I play for my life and keep it.

Saxophone is like a wife. Once you get adapted to it, no others will be better than yours (on long-term basis)!

BTW, would you mind giving me the web about the NETE that you mention? Or if you have a personal good Selmer Mark VI for sale (or other source) and/or a mpc that you might suit my wants, I will be interested to learn more about it/them.

My email address is 27v@sinaman.com

Thks!
