I like whatever good sax recordings.

Since you like desmond....I think you should try to get the Take Five recording done by Eugene Rousseau, a very different approach....superb recording....

Thanks, whatever. Regarding take five, I only have dave brubeck version. I also listen to bossa antigua very often. His tone character is as smooth as silk and natural. Sadly, I cannot get any closer to his on my alto even I have changed to use a Gregory model A.

I also have a Model A MCGreogory.... I think the mpc makes the sound fairly concentrated and bright....near...but have to use some own effort to get there........

I really hope to try a SBA alto :) currently on a MArk VI alto...

It's a bit surprise that you think model A is bright partly because it has a big barrel. Mine is not bright at all. Yes, I agree with you that it is not spread. There is a very nice SBA available for sale in a music centre in Mongkok. Check it out from the auction site at Yahoo HK. However, the asking price is outrageous - HK$40000.

I guess what Model A make me feel bright....is that it has a sticking out core sound....sort of Desmondish....well...but afterall I am using Caravan and Rascher on alto....

I got a Super Alto to try this summer...maybe a Cigar Cutter or a Radio Improved.....my modele 26 in the past is quite a nice sounding and character sax...

what other mpc r u using now Selmerboy?

btw I just used a Lawton 7* B on a Buescher TH&C alto...the reed was a 3 Vandoren at the beginning and I wasnt getting the sound as the reed and mpc openning is too tiresome for me...I then changed to a 2.5 AA reed.....wow....wow....the change is sooo obvious and crazy....I can hang out with that sound to play for ages...

Whatever:

Model A is my main axe. I am also using a Lawton 6 star B metal mouthpiece which is a monster - very responsive to play from Bb up to F#, brighter and design is beautiful. In the past, I have tried Selmer srolled shank HR, plain vanila meyer HR and a Gregory Master (which is currently listed for sale on ebay). I am still exploring other models of mouthpieces and tempting to buy a Selmer SBA. I started to play on a SBA but sold it very soon and purchased another vintage Selmer alto.

I like Stan Getz and Paul Desmond too. My favorite CDs are
Stan Getz - The Bossa Nova Years (4 CD set, highly recommended if you really love Getz]
Paul Desmond - The Complete Paul Desmond RCA Victor Recordings (5 CD set, while Bossa Antique is my favorite CD within too), Time Out (The Dave Brubeck Quartet)

Selmerboy,
Ha!!! I read your story regarding your previous SBA....I wish I bought it from you...

to play classical I am very satisfied with my Caravan medium chamber...

yes that lawton is a big monster....but I find it producing a better sound on my Buescher alto rather than my Mark VI alto....but certainly...to play some classical work..I feel the other way round...

Hi Lawrance,
How are you? what instruments are you doing now?

Hi Whatever
I am fine. How are you and your coming performance? I am still playing my King Zephry Special alto. Looking forward to trying your Beuscher. See you.

Selmerboy
If you are looking for good CDs. Check out the following and they are my favorite too.
1.) "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" - Eddie Higgins Quartet featuring Scott Hamilton
2.) "Sunset Harbor" - Ed Calle
3.) "Great Memphis Hits_King Size Soul" - King Curtis

Lawrence,

I was told that Stan Getz's "The Bossa Nova Years" CD is not under production any more. Do you know where can I get one set?

Thanks.

I bought this CDs set in "Hong Kong Records" in Admiralty about 3 years ago. I seldom see this CDs set again in CD shop afterwards. You can check the CD shops (e.g. HK Records, HMV or Jazz World - 2523 8292) to see whether they can order a copy from overseas or not.
BTW, if you like bossa nova, try "Cannonball's Bossa Nova" by Cannonball Adderley ". I like it much!
