RTHK Radio 4 Presents ¡§Jazz Workshop¡¨
Jazz Masters in Town Break the Myth of Jazz

Jazz is always regarded as a type of music for musicians, not for audiences. People find it hard to comprehend and promoting this kind of music is not easy. To uncover the mysterious wonders of Jazz, RTHK Radio 4 has invited a group of Jazz masters in town to start a ¡§Jazz Workshop¡¨ in ¡§Jazzing Up¡¨ in October and November to help listeners understand and appreciate the musical world.

Jazz masters in town, including guitarist Eugene Pao & Ken Rose, saxophonist Blaine Whittacker, pianist Ted Lo and bassist Peter Scherr, together with guest presenter Angelita Li, are going to gather at the studio to host two months of workshops on air at ¡§Jazzing Up¡¨ starting from October. They will give live demonstrations covering such topics as Jazz music styles and rhythms; theory; improvisation and technique. They will also discuss their favourite Jazz musicians and their styles and demonstrate how to communicate musically when playing.

The one-of-a-kind Jazz Workshop will definitely open the doors of Jazz music to listeners. So tune in to the Jazz Workshop, presented as part of the RTHK Radio 4¡¦s Jazzing Up¡¨ series at (FM 97.6-98.9) at 11pm every Sunday, repeated Wednesdays at 7pm, in October and November and click onto http://www.rthk.org.hk to find out more. You can also raise any questions you may have on Jazz music on RTHK¡¦s Discussion Zone at http://www.rthk.org.hk/discussion.

Hi Sai,

What do you do in RTHK, host? Producer?

My personal feeling of the first programme is that it is a bit unfocused.

It is too rudimentary for the Jazz connoisseur and at the same time the music theory, harmony theory parts too complex for people not trained in music.

You are perfectly correct. Jazz is always regarded as a type of music for Jazz musicians, not for audiences. I couldn't have put it better.

Hi Mark VI,

I've just come across those information from RTHK Radio 4. Notice that saxophonist Blaine Whittacker will be one of the guesses, so I put the information here.

I would like to quote the words of the host angelita li of the programme :

"the purpose is to open up to our workshop, the purpose is to open up doors of jazz to hong kong listeners to attract their interests and knowledge.

since we can only have one hour each week or airtime, we are trying to cover as many subjects as possible, and therefore we have this forum http://www.rthk.org.hk/discussion/ for listeners to ask questions so we can try our best to answer them.

not to speak about classical theory, but basic music theory is definitely necessary to have before you learn any other kind of music. "

If you have any questions about Jazz Music after listening, you can raise on RTHK¡¦s Discussion Zone at http://www.rthk.org.hk/discussion.

Hope you get something there!

Thank you Sai,

Been there.

Think I like or enjoy Angelita's other/previous programmes of Jazz music around the world (Asia and Latin) more. Real good.
