Nick, I didn't say anything about not supporting the ALCBA registry. The pedigrees on dogs can be kept by the breeder and it is not necessary to register dogs if you don't want to. Some people are just hunters and want good dogs for their desired game and some just don't want to spend the money. I am going to keep registering my dogs, probably with the ALCBA and UKC, I do like to hunt in the oompetition hunts once in awhile. UKC has some cur and feist hunts for squirrel and coon and I have hunted in several in the past. I have made four dogs into nite champions and so have several of the other members. I would still hunt in one once in awhile if they were more close to where I live.
I don't know of any registry that donates much of anything to help put on a hunt. There is a lot of cost involved with trophies and other prizes that are given away at the hunts. The ALCBA, INC. is just a group of members who are interested in the leopard cur dogs. The ALCBA registration office is a separate entity altogether. The membership, through its volunteers who sponsor the World Hunt are Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and one time Oklahoma sponsored the World hunt, but is was held in Missouri. The Little World Hunt is always sponsored by the Illinois section. Also, each year the Blue Ridge Section puts on a hunt in North Carolina and Lamaar Meeks sponsors a hunt in Georgia. These sections take care of setting up the hunts which takes a lot of work. Someone has to operate the kitchen, guides are needed, a master of hounds, bench show judges and others to take entries and these people receive, little, if any thanks at all. Other states are welcome to sponsor the world hunt, all the association is looking for is volunteers to have them in their states. I guess the state sections need to become more active. I realize that not all members can make it to the world hunt each and every year for one reason or another. We have members of the association that live in several different states and some in Canada. Most cannot go to the time and expense of making it to the hunts, but many just want to belong to something that they beleive will help the promotion of the dogs. Every member has input, all he has to do is drop one of the officers a note in the mail or give one a phone call to discuss different issues, or just show up at the world hunt and express your veiws.
Most members probably don't realize this, but the color yearbook that the association puts out costs over $4000. Money taken in for membership dues this year is less that three thousand dollars. As you can see, the association is losing money on the yearbook. More ads are needed to offset the cost. When the association runs out of money, I assume there will be no more yearbooks unless someone can come up with a better idea.
The post about single registering dogs: This has been happening since the registry first got started. Richard McDuffie single registered several dogs in the beginning and well beyond. If all the stories you hear about Nimrod, "the foundation of all leopards", being found in Texas running whatever, was he truly a leopard cur or was it just a name attached to a dog because he had leopard spots and short ears? There have been many hounds and different strains of curs registered as leopard curs in the past. I think it was done mainly to enlarge the gene pool so that there would be less inbreeding and linebreeding. Plott dogs were in the McDuffie strain years ago and some of the farm sheperd blood was put in later on. Just a few years ago some dogs were registered that had Treeing Walker and Black Diamond cur in them. I am not sure what the black diamond curs were, but assume that they were probably Stephen Curs. So are these dogs pure leopard? I don't think so and I can get the paperwork to prove it. Myself, I just want to know that the dogs that I hunt are leopard curs for at least three or four generations, beyond that I don't really care. If I like the dogs I hunt, I keep them, if not, they are culled!
Sure there is a wide variety in color and conformation of these dogs, but study some of the pedigrees and talk to some of the old timers to find out what the ancient ancestors really were.
If you go back far enough, you will find that all breeds of dogs came from WOLVES.
That's all for now, but I can always write again. Dan N
