Archie,
I think you know quite well that Jed and I both have a dog going back to Jug. We are both getting ready to test these dogs on big game. They are now about 8 months old and will be hunted out real soon.
I have seen numerous really nice Clark dogs that were good and reliable on small game.
This pup I now have here is the houdiest Leopard I have ever owned, but he does meet the standards. He does not have a white hair on him. Everybody who comes here notices that he does not look much like the rest of my dogs. Whether I keep him here or ever use him is a big question. I just want to see if he will make a bear dog. I am going to test him and see for myself. I intend to try a few dogs from other strains in the near future.
I have wondered for a long time if these Clark-bred dogs were gritty enough for bear. The ones I have seen were definitely track drivers and had many of the qualities I look for in a dog. I am not happy about the extra hound and other breeds that were bred into them.
I know that the "Jug" registration was a uniquely different situation, but Jed and I had absolutely nothing to do with it. We inherited him along with others that have caused some Leopard people to wonder. Please remember that the association voted unanimously to register Jug, throwing out his falsified papers. The attempt to register him honestly was applaudable.
Jed and I have not thrown out any dogs, but all dogs applying for permanent registration will have to meet standards, no matter who they belong to. All ALCBA permanently registered dogs are just that permanently registered, but their offspring will have to meet the standards.
Randy
