Viewfinder : Too many film awards

THE LOCAL show biz scene is rife with awesome ironies. One of the most recent phenomena along these lines is the confounding fact that, as Filipino film production has drastically dropped, the number of local movie award groups continues to rise!

The last time we counted, there were some 10 different film awards, while annual movie production has plunged from a high of 200 to something like only 70 or so last year.

So, the ratio between movies produced and awards group that "honor" them is around seven films per awards group! This would make Filipino movies the most "awarded" in the world!

This situation would be laughable, were it not so lamentable-and hypocritical.

Awards groups profess to come up with new sets of cinematic citations to give the floundering Filipino movie industry a boost, but some of them are seen to be in it mainly for the money, influence and power.

Worse, a number of our film awards groups wouldn't know a good movie if it hit them in the kisser. This explains why some of our awards groups can't seem to agree on which production should be voted as Best Picture, thus confusing film fans no end.

In fact, some so-called film awardees are so patently mediocre that they prompt some movie buffs to stop paying attention to movie awards in general. For our part, we aren't as blanket in our condemnation and still give a credence to a couple of awards groups' choices.

All this would be really no big deal, except for the fact that undeserved awards rob worthy winners of the credibility that they're entitled to. So, we should be vigilant against incompetent and fly-by-night groups that hand out trophies for their own subjective ends.

There are film standards to be maintained, and film lovers in the know should use them as touchstones by which to evaluate the credibility of different awards groups' verdicts.

Ultimately, the biggest losers in this sorry situation are the members of the viewing public. Since awards have become so unreliable, the average viewer has become confused about which movies and film artists to patronize.

To protect himself, the concerned viewer should survey each awards group's record in the past five years. Have the groups' verdicts been generally reliable? If so, continue to give its decisions the importance they deserve. As for the groups whose verdicts often come out of left field, ignore them for the mere distractions they are.

As for the film talents who win awards they suspect they don't deserve: Don't rest on your laurels, be cause you know darn well that you have to work much harder to win the genuine awards that really matter!
