A love borne of music
And so it came to pass.

The much-awaited wedding of long-time lovebirds Gerard Salonga and violinist DJ Francisco finally took place last Sunday, May 8. It was an elaborately solemn and very personal celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. Manoling Francisco, a close friend of the Salongas, at the Sanctuario de San Antonio Parish in Forbes Park, Makati City.

The bride was in tears as she walked down the aisle, radiant in her Maria Clara-inspired gown, a creation of JC Buendia, who also made the barong tagalog of the groom. She was flanked by her mother and uncle as the Philippine Madrigal Singers and the GC4 Orchestra and Friends filled the church with songs that were personally arranged by the groom.

The tears, however, failed to smudge the beautiful make-up done rendered by famous make-up artist Juan Sarte, a favorite of the Salongas. DJ’s hair was styled by Celeste Tuviera.

Lea Salonga, Gerard’s internationally-famous sister, stood as the groom’s Honor Attendant and looked radiant in her Rajo Laurel powder blue and white gown. Their loving mother Ligaya Salonga, who also looked very elegant in her Inno Sotto ensemble in royal blue, walked arm in arm with her only son.

DJ, who is Divina Juanita in real life, broke down in tears several times, while exchanging marriage vows with Gerard, whom she called her bestfriend, "the one I laugh with, live for, and love" and then again while exchanging wedding rings and receiving the blessing from Fr. Manoling.

Gerard was in high spirits as he acknowledged the deafening round of applause and yells of joy from the crowd that gathered to witness the ceremony, by raising his arms triumphantly, with a big smile on his face. His sister Lea led the cheerers, as she probably remembers her own special day when she married Robert Chien in ceremonies held in Los Angeles, California in January of 2004.

Lea’s husband Robert Chien said the first reading and responsorial psalm while musical director Archie Castillo took charge of the second reading.

There were five sets of principal sponsors: Columnist Maximo Soliven (who failed to make it to the occasion), Mrs. Aurora Go, Antonio Salonga, Aida Regala Siu, Charles A. Rapaport, Mrs. Carmelita Mata, Arnel Garcia, Divina Perez Lazo, Basilio Manalo and Marlene Aviguetero.

The wedding entourage, all wearing the beautiful motif of powder blue and butter yellow in gowns made by JC Buendia, was composed mostly of the couple’s friends, a number of whom belongs to the orchestra which the couple often work with in their performances. Among the familiar names in the entourage were Cesar Aguas, Emil Salud, and Marvin Querido.

After more than an hour after the nuptial mass, the reception was held at the beautifully-decorated Le Pavillon on Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. Consistent with the Filipiniana theme, layers of white cloth adorned the ceiling of the venue, with drops of capiz lining the center.

Via Mare served cocktails at the lobby while guests await the arrival of the newlyweds. There was a buffet table of fresh and baked oysters, while waiters went around offering chips to guests.

The sumptuous buffet table served Filipino dishes like kare-kare, chicken pastel, roast beef, fresh lumpia, roast chicken, pomelo salad, and puto bumbong, bibingka, halo-halo and fresh fruits for dessert.

Fun and games characterized the program, which was very appropriately hosted by Gerard’s old-time friend TV personality RJ Ledesma. A brief footage of Gerard’s proposal to DJ while they were in Disneyland USA in the early part of 2004 was shown much to the amusement of the audience.

Gerard and the unsuspecting DJ were shown posing for photographs with the Disney mascots Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, etc. when suddenly, Gerard went down on his knees, took out a ring handed to him by one of the mascots and asked DJ to marry him. DJ made a lot in the audience teary-eyed when she was shown just crying and crying happily as she accepted Gerard’s marriage proposal. The videographers, Lea and Rob, were heard laughing their hearts out, while recording the occasion on video.

DJ completed the tradition of having something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue in her own wedding. She was wearing diamond earrings which were borrowed from her mother-in-law, Mrs. Salonga. Her garter was in blue, and the something old, was the diamond-studded vintage brooch that was pinned on her gown.

Among those whom we saw during the very special occasion were: concert king Martin Nievera, Lynn Sherman (who sang "My Romance") and her musician husband (who accompanied her on the piano), Irene Marcos Araneta (who only attended the church ceremonies), the Bayo group Ferdie Agustin and wife Lynn, Sonny and Corcor Bitong, and French and Yvette Lejano; Sony-BMG big boss Rudy Tee (minus his wife Myrna who was vacationing with their kids in the East Coast), Sony-BMG executive Narciso Chan, ABS-CBN’s Leah Salterio and Mickey Munoz, and talent manager Ricky Gallardo.

The couple flew to Amanpulo the day after for their honeymoon. They will settle at their new home in Alabang, where Gerard’s office is located. DJ also works in the same office as Gerard’s.

The couple is raring and ready to start a family, as we have gleaned from Gerard’s vows.
