If makeup can do the trick, Johnny Depp has the market cornered.

RIP Jonathan -- you were fabulous!

He got to do a cameo in the movie, which I think is pretty cool.

Absolutely cool. And convenient. Mr. Frid got an early look at the Depp makeup and the Burton (Please, don't send me posts about the wonders of the aforementioned gentlemen and movie making. I'm already a huge fan.) direction. Was absolutely astounded and, consequently, had time to plan his departure prior to the launching of the movie! teehee Lewis H, you wonderful you, why aren't you already in this? Love to one and all.

Frid did not die over the movie. We have no idea how he felt about it, but he did agree to appear in it, so I have to think he was OK with it. He died from injuries from a fall. He was 87. It is unfair to blame the movie just because you don't like the casting.

Precious gachner, I was elated by the Burton/Depp duo for the movie until I saw the way Depp is playing Barnabas, makeup, etc., and Burton is letting him. Now I have to rearrange years of my tortured, brooding Barnabas and let him become a clown in clown makeup. I despair, but I will, by God, see the accursed movie. Besides, this is the most chat we've had about any subject in weeks. Haven't you enjoyed it? I certainly have.

they really weren't all THAT serious about the original soap. There was a lot of camp, a lot of overacting, and very low budgets so that you see the occassional scene where a lighting or propman is visible. And there are bloopers too:

I just gotta say it. If I had run into him in a dark
alley dressed in costume as the Mad Hatter from Alice in
Wonderland I would have fainted from fright.

He has hit it big with Disney.

I've obviously missed something because I have no idea what anyone is talking about - except I do have the theme tune on my IPod, which is something, I guess. Mind you, I'm still none the wiser.

in the mid 60's the very first television show that featured vampires, werewolves, and witches premiered. It was a daytime soap opera called Dark Shadows. Johnathan Frid was the lead, a vampire named Barnabas Collins. For its time (were' talking almost 50 years ago now) it was considered very sexy and many teenage girls I knew (babysitters) rushed home from school to watch every day.
(Actually Quentin Collins, the werewolf, was even more popular.)

You can check out this website for more:

Anyway, the current Dark Shadows movie is a comedy and Johnny Depp, as he usually does in his roles looks a bit strange. Purists are a bit upset but many of us think it will be good fun.

I was in Walmart this week and in the $5 bin of
DVD's, there was Dark Shadows - The Haunting of Collinwood.
This release reveals how the children of Collinwood beome
possessed by the ghost of Quentin Collins, and a bonus episode revealing what happened to Quentin before he was a ghost. It ran 210 minutes without pausing in the story so I
didn't revove it from my DVD player for many days.

Cast:
Quentin Collins played by David Selby, and Jonathan Frid had
a smaller part on this DVD.

Other cast members were Joan Bennett, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Grayson Hall, Louis Edmonds, David Henesy, Thayer David and
Denise Nickerson.

I got my $5 worth. (Big smile)

According to the DVD, the show ran from 1966-71. More than
2200 shows. 20 million viewers. Barnabas became a cultural icon.

Dark Shadows re-aired on some channel and I watched it then. I might have seen it before then but I can't remember, ha ha. I loved the stories where they go back in time, so much fun and drama. They have a few episodes which were genuinely creepy (the dreaming sickness??), too.

They re-do all the old tv shows as comedies now, it's sad. Starsky and Hutch, Land of the Lost (hey, I took it seriously when I was little!), 21 Jump Street, now Dark Shadows.

RIP, Jonathan Frid
