Shantal jumped out of the fountain as she heard Michael’s movements, taking the black silk robe she covered herself and pulled her soaking hair up into a braid. She slowly returned to the bedroom.

Standing at the threshold she watched as Michael threw the silk sheet over his head and curled himself into a ball under the sheet. Shantal could see the soft trembling of his body as he tried to control his desires.

“Maybe I should move out and leave him these rooms.” Shaking her head she slowly entered the room and walked toward the armoire. “If I leave him alone he might end up harming himself or.....that witch could simply move in and that.....I won’t allow.” She thought as she opened the armoire’s door.

Michael took a deep breath and held it as he heard the soft patter of her bare feet on the marble floor. With his eyes closed he tried to bring the image of Nikita and his son forward, but instead his mind brought the soft, shimmering image of Shantal’s naked body. He gasped and tried hard to control his emotions.

“No, I will not be the same stupid boy I once was. Shantal will not force me to do what I do not want.” He whispered to himself as he took deep, even breaths, trying to bring calmness and control back into his weak body.

Shantal sighed and slowly pulled the pale blue gown over her head. The softness of the silk caressed her naked skin making her moan softly. “Why is my skin is ultra sensitive tonight?” She wondered as the silky material gently dropped below her hips. Trembling she imagined the silky touch was that of Michael's lips, softly nibbling, sucking and licking down her over sensitive skin. She shivered hearing the soft knock on the door. Turning she watched Michael stiffen under his cover and inhale sharply.

Closing her eyes she slowly turned and walked to the door, grabbing the doorknob she stiffened herself and slowly opened the door.

“NO! Don’t open the door please!” The soft whisper made her spin around and encounter wide, shimmering jade green eyes. Her gaze shifted lower and took the pale heaving chest, covered with the soft sprinkling of cinnamon curls around the nipples. She noticed that each curl stood on end, almost like he had seen a ghost. Her gaze shifted lower and she fought a smile as she watched his shaking hands hold the silk sheet at his waist, keeping the tantalizing view of his nether region well covered. Her mouth quivered softly up at the edges as her gaze shifted and met his once again.

“What’s wrong Michael?” She asked, feeling the door being pushed open she hissed at whoever was behind the door. “Stay!”

Michael’s pupils dilated even farther at her forceful words. He lowered his gaze to his lap and clasped his hands tightly. “Don’t open the door.......please.” He barely whispered.

Shantal sighed. “Michael I need to know who this is, and what they want.”

Michael looked up and stared deeply into her dark orbs for several sconds before nodding faintly.

Shantal turned and opened the door just enough to see who it was. Omar stood, his arms crossed before his chest. His gaze lowered to the ground. “Omar? What is it?”

Omar shuffled his feet softly before lifting his gaze to meet hers. “She wants him, will send for him within the hour.” He stated in a bare whisper.

Shantal nodded and slowly closed the door. She leaned her forehead on the soft wood and sighed. “Now what do I do? I can’t let her play with him today. He’s too vulnerable right now, if she touches him he might be lost forever.” She thought as she slowly turned around.

Michael felt the soft ripple of fear that radiated from Shantal. His breathing accelerated and his heart bolted inside his chest cavity, thumping painfully in ever increasing rhythm. His hand fluttered softly to press against his heaving chest.

“She wants me.” He mumbled softly.

Shantal felt a tremor of fear rush down her spine and curl swiftly at the base of her spine where her tail would have been. she had the distinct feeling of wanting to flee like a hunted rabbit. She shook the intense, unpleasant sensation and dashed for the bed.

“I won’t let her take you Michael, I’ll find a way to keep you here.” She stated taking his cold, shaking hands softly between her own.

Michael snatched his hands away and slowly laid down on the pillows closing his eyes. “It’s no use Shantal, she’ll have me in her bed no matter what we do.” He whispered dejectedly.

Shantal took a seat beside him on the bed and sighed.

“There must be some way to keep you away from-“ she looked up and smiled widely.

Michael’s eyes popped open, he gazed at her wearily.

“What?”

Shantal leaned over and gently placed a soft kiss on his pale cheek, giggling at the soft scratchiness of his beard. “I think I know how to keep you safe, but......” She sighed and stared deeply into his jade orbs.

Michael sat up. “But what? What do I have to do?” He asked breathlessly.

Shantal stood and shook her head. “It will be quite uncomfortable Michael, even painful.”

Michael reached out and clasped Shantal’s left hand tightly in his grasp. “Tell me.”

Shantal pulled her hand away and twirled toward the garden. “There is a plant that will make her stay away from you, maybe even leave the palace if we can convince her that you are contagious.”

Michael shook his head confused and stood trying to follow her, he wavered dizzily. Closing his eyes he reached out and attempted to grab the column, missing he collapsed to the floor.

Shantal hearing the grunt of pain pivoted and gasped. She rushed to his side and knelt beside him, gently reaching out and lifting his lowered face.

“Are you hurt?” Her gaze searched his visage for blood or bruises, not finding any she sighed.

Michael licked his dry lips and shook his head, slowly he lifted his hand, curling it around hers. “Tell me what you have in mind. What could cause Rahine to run away?”

Shantal smiled brightly. “First I need to get you back in bed.” She lifted his left arm and gently laid it over her shoulder, slowly she helped him up. Standing she
felt his body quake softly as he tried to not lean heavily upon her. “Maybe you should eat something and sleep. You’re still weak and-“

Michael pressed his fingers against her lips. “Tell me please. I can eat and sleep once we’ve gotten rid of Rahine.”

Shantal smiled softly and gently kissed his fingers.

“You’re right.” she stated as she carefully dragged Michael back into bed. Once his head rested upon the soft silk pillows she covered him with the silk sheet and sat beside him.

“Michael; my idea might be dangerous, it could cause an allergic reaction in your weakened system.” She closed her eyes and inhaled softly.

Michael reached out and gently gripped her hand. “The only thing I’m allergic to is tomatoes, vinegar and bees.” He stated nonchalantly.

Shantal smiled and lifted his hand to her mouth, pressing a soft kiss upon his still raw knuckles. Looking deeply into his jade green eyes she gently filled a glass of water and helped him to sit up and drink.

“It’s safe, no drugs. I served it myself from the water bottle.” She said as he stared wearily at her. Slowly he parted his lips and gulped the cool water.

While he drank the water Shantal explained her idea to him.

“I know of a plant that causes large, red welts to appear on your skin if rubbed vigorously. The most vulnerable area is the armpits, groin and face. The welts mimic a certain very contagious disease. I’m sure that if Rahine sees you she will at least leave you alone until you heal, but if we’re lucky she’ll leave the palace and exile herself in the winter palace. But......it will be excruciatingly painful once the welts burst. ”

Michael sighed as the last drop of water drifted down his parched throat.

“What other choice do we have?”

Shantal nodded. Helping him to prop his trembling body against the backboard of the bed she stood and dashed to the garden. Where she gathered the prickly leaves of a gorse bush that rested hidden in the corner of the garden, Slowly pulling them with the edge of her silk nightgown she quickly returned to the bedroom and carefully dropped the leaves on the bed side table.

Michael looked dubiously at the dark, prickly leaves. Reaching out he took one of the leaves in his hand and hissed at the sting.

Chuckling, Shantal gently took the leaf off his hand and pressed a kiss on his palm, where the welts were already making themselves present. “Michael; Onnia knew more than I will ever know about this plant, but she did give me the idea of using it in case there was no other way.” She lifted his hips and gently peeled his pants off. "I don't know the antidote for the juice of the plant, once it penetrates you will have to wait for your skin to fight the redness and welts on its own."

Michael smiled softly and nodded. "I've suffered much worse for my job and love."

Shantal sniffed softly knowing exactly how much suffering he had already endured. “You’re so perfectly made Michael, I wish so badly that you would care for me.......But I know I know it can never be.” Shantal sighed and gently slipped her fingers into the large leather gloves, gently she took the gorse bush leaves into her hand and rubbed the juice on his pale skin. Immediately red welts began to appear on
his groin and face.

Michael fought the urge to scratch his itchy skin, he felt his skin burst into waves of heat as he laid his head back and sighed at the soft breeze that floated into the
bedroom. Closing his eyes he allowed his mind to wander toward his former life. He could see so vividly Nikita and Adam behind his closed lids. He felt the girl’s touch, gentle on his fevered skin as she tried to bring the itchy welts to life.

Shantal finished rubbing the juice and gently peeled her gloves off, careful to not touch her skin. smiling softly she brushed that errant curl off his forehead and back behind his right ear. She could feel the heat flow from his skin as the juice of the gorse bush penetrated his sensitive skin. She knew that within the hour his skin would be red and covered with welts.

Michael turned his face toward her touch and his lips curved slightly upward. He felt his lids becoming heavy with sleep and he fought the need to rest.

“How long until I look and feel sick?” He mumbled sleepily.

Shantal smiled. “Your skin looks quite amazing, and the heat radiating from you is almost palpable. Rahine will send her minions for you soon and once they see you they will quickly rush to tell Rahine you are ill, maybe having some contagious disease.” She shrugged and slowly stood, taking the leaves out into the garden and swiftly buried them. Wiping her hands she returned to the bedroom and rushed to the armoire where she took the soft lilac cotton two piece sleeping suit and changed.

The knock on the door made Shantal jump. She gently took the cool towel off Michael’s heated forehead and rushed to open the door.

“The man is sick. He burns with fever and his skin has turned raw and red.” She stated as she cracked open the door.

Gadari entered slowly, Rahine’s two large African men followed slowly, their gazed roaming the rooms until they saw Michael’s shivering form on the bed.

Gadari uncovered Michael’s chest and gasped. “He’s covered in welts and his lips are bleeding Shantal !” He cursed under his breath and looked at Rahine’s guards.

“Go tell Lalla Rahine that the man is ill.” He ordered as he stared deeply into Shantal’s dark gaze.

The men shook their heads and stepped closer to the bed, Gadari uncovered Michael’s writhing form and the men scurried away.

Gadari smiled and followed them to the door, closing it he turned. “What did you give him he looks terrible.”

Shantal shrugged and bolted across the room to kneel beside Michael.

“Endure this just a few more minutes Michael, Rahine will want to see for herself what ails you but once she sees the welts and bloody lips she will leave you alone.”

Michael’s glazed gaze slowly focused on her face and he slowly nodded, Wincing as if in pain.

Shantal bathed Michael’s skin with cool towels immersed in cold chamomile tea. Hearing the loud shrieks Rahine spouted, she heaved a deep sigh and turned as the door crashed open.

Rahine stood, nostrils flaring. “What is this about Michael being sick?” She asked as she stepped closer to the bed.

Shantal nodded and gently lifted the cool towel off Michael’s raw face. Showing Rahine how Michael looked.

Rahine took several steps back before crossing herself.

“What’s wrong with him?”

Shantal bowed softly and shrugged. “I’m not sure Milady. He woke with a high fever and his skin suddenly began to sprout welts, his lips bleed and he can barely keep anything
down.” turning toward Rahine she stood and slowly approached her.

“Please call a physician milady.”

Rahine shook her head and slowly stepped back. “What is the illness?” She whispered softly.

One of the guards stepped forward and leaned over his owner, whispering something that turned Rahine’s dark skin quite pale.

“Spanish influenza? How can that be? It has been extinct for almost one hundred years!” Rahine screeched as she stepped farther away from the bed. Turning she lifted her hands and quickly rushed out of the bedroom, her voice echoing down the hallway as she retreated to her rooms.

“Shantal you have three days to make him better.”

Shantal smiled and watched as Gadari and Omar closed the doors. Turning she charged the bed and gently lifted Michael’s head on her lap. Looking up she wiped the tears that slowly drifted down her cheeks away.

“Gadari turn the fans on, Omar find out if Rahine will leave the palace or not.” She gently wiped the sweat off Michael’s skin.

Michael’s eyelids drifted open slightly, once his gaze met hers, he slowly allowed a smile to play upon his pale lips and licked them.

“Thank you Shantal.” He whispered softly before allowing his lids to close and he drifted slowly into a restless sleep.

“You’re welcome Michael, I’m glad I was able to keep Rahine from touching you.” She whispered as she brushed her knuckles down his hot skin.
