十七世紀的上半葉，有許多思想界的巨人展露頭角或者是出生，

包括深受世人景仰的培根（Francis Bacon，1561-1626，英國），

偉大的劇作家莎士比亞（ William Shakespeare，1564-1616，英國），

物理學家與天文學家伽利略（Galileo Galilei，1564-1642，義大利），

機械的唯物主義論者霍布斯（Thomas Hobbes，1588-1679，英國），

西方近代哲學的奠基者笛卡兒（ Rene Descartes，1596-1650，法國），

著名的數學家費馬（ Pierre de Fermat，1601-1665，法國），

理性主義與形上學家斯賓諾莎（ Benedictus de Spinoza，1632-1677，荷蘭），

經驗主義的代表與啟蒙運動的先驅洛克（ John Locke，1632-1704 ，英國），

而後有牛頓（Isaac Newton，1643-1727，英國）

與萊布尼玆（Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz，1646-1716，德國）等等近代科學的重要人物的誕生。

然而，那個時期同屬於法國，在物理、數學、哲學與神學等等領域，

能夠與笛卡兒相提並論的思想家就是巴斯卡（Blaise Pascal，1623-1662，或譯作帕斯卡）。
