有報導指出，一個人的IQ是天生的，科學家也在第六染色體找到高IQ的基因（IGF2R），高IQ的父母生下來子女大多聰明。

研究還發現，一個人的IQ有50％是遺傳，20％是家庭環境，其他30％來自胎教、教育及社會環境。

一個人的IQ會隨著年齡、教育及社會經驗而進步。
