DVDs like commercial videos are protected by a system called Macrovision which sends a rogue signal to the VHS recorder which upsets its automatic recording levels. It only affects the video signal, not the audio. What you need is a signal stabilizer. I bought one for £30 from www.sonel.com in the UK. It is a small chip incorporated into a standard Scart connector with a separate transformer-power supply. It works perfectly. As far as I understand the law, if you make the copy for private use and do not make any money out of it, it counts as "fair use" and is thus not illegal. (But don't quote me on that!)
