I bought a grundig gds2000 second-hand from ebay over a year ago and it's still going strong, with no modifications to its power supply.

Admittedly I did fit an in-line switch to the ac power chord so that i can switch the box off when i'm not using it. Apparently even in standyby mode most of the circuits in the box are still powered on, which is why it stays warm.

Take a look at "Reception Help" - I think your box is listed on there as ok for fringe areas.
