Have you tried connecting your box to your friends system ?
This would be the easiest test to start with.
If it doesn,t work then you'll have established that your box is worse than his. If it does work then you'll know that your box works with a 1.5 and can start looking at other things like alignement, type of cable, clear lign of sight to satellite etc.
