Subject: I Quit (Songfic)

Carly is at Ferncliff and Jason has just told Robin that Carly is moving into the cottage with them. Please R&R.

Setting: Luke's

It was your typical night in Port Charles, Luke was throwing a typical Luke party and the typical residents were in attendance. And unfortunately the tension radiating around Robin Scorpio and Jason Morgan's table was also in attendance.

Jason: "Robin, I don't know what you want from me. I told you, Carly has to come and stay with us, Michael needs both his parents."

Robin: "Then send Carly and Michael to go live with the Quartermaines. That way he can be with his mother *and* father."

Jason: "I am Michael's father."

Robin: "For all intents and purposes, yes you are. Too bad all those intents and purposes are for Carly's benefit."

Jason: "I'm doing what's best for Michael."

Robin: "What a coincidence that what's best for Michael is also what's best for Carly."

Jason: "I can't lose him Robin."

Robin(sighs): "I know Jason. But knowing Carly, you're going to."

Jason: "I can't talk about this anymore right now. I'm going to get a beer. Want anything?"

Robin: "Don't put yourself out. That job's reserved for me, rememeber?"

Jason gets up from the table and heads towards the bar. Robin looks over to the stage and gets an idea of how to tell Jason once and for all that she can't deal with this anymore. She walks up to the band and whispers to the guitarist. The members talk to each other and motion Robin up on stage.

Guitarist: "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we have a special guest singer. Miss Robin Scorpio is going to perform the song "I Quit"."

The crowd bursts into applause and Jason turns to the stage to watch her. he'd heard her sing and knew she had a good voice. The band begins to play and Robin leans into the mike.

Robin: There was a time when
I would go walking backwards
Round the world if you said you're mine
And I'd run blindfold down
the Kings Road Monday morning
If you'd just for once arrive on time.

But you turned into another liar
And you came on like a new messiah
So before you say what you desire
I'm telling you now

I Quit! I Quit!
'Cause lovin' you's a job I don't need
Ain't gonna go to work no more
I Quit! I Quit!
This situation's vacant for me
Ain't gonna go to work no more
Ain't gonna go to work no more
Ain't gonna go to work

Jason sees Robin look directly at him as she sings these words of anger and hurt. He flinches under her unwavering gaze.

I got my hands dirty
While you rolled cigarettes
With one eye on the time
I tried my hardest, I've been consciencious
But I'm taking back this heart of mine

You can't roll me round your tongue no more, baby
It's time to clear up your emotional debris
And if I'm falling overboard, please don't save me
'Cause I'm telling you now

I Quit! I Quit!
'Cause lovin' you's a job I don't need
Ain't gonna go to work no more
I Quit! I Quit!
This situation's vacant for me
Ain't gonna go to work no more
Ain't gonna go to work no more
Ain't gonna go to work

Robin still refuses to look away. To her there was no one but her errant lover in the room. He needed to know, tonight was the last straw for them. That he would tell her, not even ask, that Carly was invading their world, their home, was reprehensible. This was it, it wasn't what she wanted, but it had to be done.

You're just like every other lover
A shot rings out and you go running for cover
And I'm so sorry I can't be your mother
And I'm telling you now..

I Quit! I Quit!
'Cause loving you's a job I don't need
Ain't gonna go to work no more....

The last chord echoed throughout Luke's and after it faded there was only silence, until the crowd rose to its feet and cheered. Robin left Luke's to a standing ovation. Jason struggled to fight his way through the mass of undulating people, but by the time he reached the door, Robin was already gone.

Later: The Cottage

Jason raced home to try to talk to Robin. He didn't see her car in the driveway, but he hoped she was there anyway. He ran upstairs and found the closet open and about half her clothes already gone. She'd planned this, tonight was his last chance to prove that she was a priority in his life and he failed. Miserably. He went to the phone, intent on calling Mac, but thought better of it. That would be the place she was least likely to go, becuase he would call there first. He then thought to call her guards, but if they knew anything, they would have called him at the sight of her moving her clothes. A panic seized him. She was without her guards! What if something happened to her? It would be all his fault. He walked to the desk and raised his hand clear it with a blow, and it was then that he noticed her letter.

Dear Jason,

You have no idea how hard it is to write this, or how much I hope that I can come home and rip it to shreds. If I do need to leave this for you to find, it is because you have chosen Carly and a child that is by no rights yours, over me. I love Michael, you know that, but I will not come second to Carly and her schemes. Nor will I come second to your revenge on the Quartermaines for hurts that you think they've caused you and that Carly tells you they have caused her. I can't lose myself to be with you. A couple is two individuals who are connected, not one person who is merely an extension of the other. I forgot that for awhile. Hopefully I can regain that knowledge as well as my equilibrium, so that we can both move on. Yes Jason, move on. You with your family, and me with my life. I love you, always.

Love,
Robin

Jason clutches the letter tighter in his hand. A pain worse than anything he's ever felt rips through him. His gut wrenches and he feels like he's going to throw up. The pain in his heart he knew was from Robin leaving, the neusea was what Robin once described as guilt. He felt guitly because he knew on some level she was right. It was about vengence. And he was using Michael to get it. One of the worst things he swore he'd never do. The second brought to his attention that night. The other was evidenced by that song and this letter. He swore he'd never hurt her, that he'd die before he did and here he was alone again because of a lie. Oh God, yet another thing he swore to never do. All of these he did because he wanted revenge and to help a friend. Jason sat down on the bed and put his head in his hands. The nobler part of him said it was better that Robin was determined to move on. She was better off without him. The other, more selfish part, told his noble half to "shut the hell up", it was about time he fought for Robin. He didn't last time and nearly lost her to that prince. He'd be damned if he lost her to anyone else. It was time to fight for her the same way he'd fought to keep Michael. He reached for the phone again and dialed.

Jason: "AJ, it's Jason. I need to talk to you. Not over the phone, later. But it is important. Yeah, tomorrow is good. Ok. Bye."

Jason hung up feeling like a weight had been partially lifted from him. It would be gone when he told AJ the truth tomorrow. Now he had to work on a plan to get back the woman he loved. It wouldn't be easy, he knew that. he'd let her down too often. But he'd prove himeslf to her, if it was the last thing he did.
