Subject: DANCE WITH LIFE -- Chapter 9 (With a bonus Surprise!)

Here is Chapter 9! And there is a tiny surprise at the end for those who are interested.

----------------------

Chapter 9 –

Mac stood in the hospital corridor with Felicia and Bobbie, discussing the accident and the Scorpio women’s new involvement with Morgan and Corrinthos.

“Did you find anything on the driver of the car?” Bobbie asked Mac.

“No.” Mac said with disappointment. “But we’re working on it.” He assured her. “What worries me more is the fact that ever since Robin’s been back in town, there never seems to be a minute that I don’t run into Corrinthos or Morgan. Can’t they just leave her alone?” he added in a worried manner.

“Mac…” Felicia interjected.

“No. Don’t say it.” He said calmly. “Don’t tell me I’m overreacting. Not after what Jason put Robin through the last time she was here.”

“We know practically nothing about that, except the obvious, which everybody knows.” Felicia reminded him, rationally.

“I know enough.” He replied, dryly.

“It’s more convenient for you to think so.” Felicia argued as they all walked towards Anna’s room.

“Really?” Mac said, turning to her.

“Yes. Really.” Felicia answered back with determination.

“Well, I know that nothing good can come out of getting close to these people. Danger, threats, power and deaths, maybe. But, nothing good.” He said as he almost wished he wasn’t right.

“That’s where you’re wrong.” She told him, convinced by her own words.

“I’m not.”

“You are.” She added. “Think back three of four years ago. And, think about Robin.” She challenged him. “Think about the smile on her face back then and tell me – go ahead and tell me – that this smile wasn’t a good thing.” She told him.

Mac stood there in front of her, took a deep breath and stayed silent for a while.

“Jason and Sonny are a lot of things, and yes not all of them good, but when it comes to Robin, they would never deliberately hurt her.” She said.

“But they did!” Mac exclaimed, almost incredulous at the thought of Felicia defending two mobsters.

“Well, mistakes happen!” she threw back at him. “I hurt you, you hurt me. Does that make us monsters??” she asked, but didn’t wait for him to reply. “Things happen. And, before you banish them from the island, just give the guys a break. Jason did save Anna….twice!” she said as Mac stared at her. “Besides, this is Robin’s business, not ours.” She reminded him.

“Why are we arguing about this??” Mac asked her as they stopped in front of Anna’s door.

Felicia sighed before shaking her head slightly. That was a good question.

“Oh because we’re just so damn good at it!” she sighed again as he reached for the doorknob.

Mac gave her one last look and then opened the door slowly. He, Felicia and Bobbie started walking in when Mac suddenly stopped in his tracks. His eyes were riveted to the bed in front of him. In a panic, he started scanning the room with his eyes, attempting to understand what he was seeing but couldn’t.

There, in front of them, lied an empty bed. Bobbie, clearly as shocked as the others, ran to the cabinet and noticed how some of Anna’s medication was missing.

“Anna?” Mac called as he peaked in the bathroom. “Robin??” he called out louder.

“Mac,” Felicia started and then stopped as she motioned towards the bed.

On the middle, right near the pillow, rested a small folded piece of paper. Mac reached for it and unfolded it carefully. As soon as he read the first words, his heart skipped a beat.

“Mac, we needed some time to catch up. Don’t worry about us. Everything’s alright. We’ll be back soon. Love, Robin and Anna.”

Mac turned around to face Felicia and Bobbie with a look of mixed frustration and worry.

--

In the meantime, already far away from General Hospital, and Port Charles in general, Anna, Robin, Jason and Sonny pulled over in a large driveway. The rented car slowly stopped and Jason, Robin and Sonny quickly opened their doors and walked out. Anna, barely awake by that time, didn’t even notice Sonny opening her door and lifting her into his arms.

“Are you sure about this Sonny?” Robin asked in a very concerned and worried tone.

“Everything’s going to be okay.” He assured her as he carried Anna to the door.

Jason and Robin both picked up the small bags and followed him. Attempting to keep both Robin and Anna safe from Helena Cassadine and whatever she might have planned for the Scorpio women, Sonny had offered to take them into hiding – until they figured out their next move – at his beach house. Robin had been rather reluctant to do this, especially the part about not telling Mac what was truly going on, but she had caved. She knew it was for her own safety as well as her mother’s.

Robin walked into the house and breathed in the sight that graced her. She had never been there before, but she knew that Jason had. He’d been here at least one time she knew of. The look on his face when he walked in reminded her of that. He seemed to be looking around at his surroundings. Things hadn’t changed. The place looked exactly the same.

Later that night…

Anna was lying on a bed as Robin went through her bag on the floor. Anna opened her eyes, still a bit groggy from her painkillers. She looked over at her daughter just as Robin looked up.

“I’m sorry.” Robin whispered. “Did I wake you?” she asked with an apologetic glance.

Anna shook her head softly and smiled.

“No.”

Anna carefully, and painfully, tried to lift herself up in a seating position. Robin immediately walked towards her to help but Anna motioned that she was fine.

“I’m okay.” Anna whispered as she managed to sit up by herself. She looked at Robin and glanced at the bag lying on the floor. “Are you okay with this?” she then asked, concerned.

“Yes.” Robin said, trying to reassure her as best as she could. “I am, really.” She laughed softly at the sight of her mother’s doubtful eyes. “I mean, I do hate lying to Mac about this. But if that’s what it takes, I’ll do it. I won’t risk losing you.” Robin explained.

Robin paused and looked out the window for a few seconds and then laughed out loud, almost at herself and shook her head. Anna watched her curiously.

“What?” Anna asked her daughter as Robin looked at her with a silly grin on her face.

“I am so going to regret this.” She answered still shaking her head.

“What do you mean…?”

“Just…lying to protect people, and then lying not to lose people…” Robin sighed and leaned against one of the desks. “But, I guess in this case it’s different.” She said, looking at her mother’s tired eyes.

“For a moment there, I…” Anna started, a bit hesitatingly at first. “For a moment there I thought you were talking about them.” She said as she pointed down.

“Ah…” Robin let out and then paused, looking down at the floor before her. “I trust Sonny. He won’t let anything happen to me, or to you, no matter how things stand between us now.”

“If you say so.” Anna agreed with a smile.

There was a short silence between the two of them before Robin turned her mind back to the present.

“Do you want anything to eat?” Robin finally asked as she took a step forward. “It’s my time to eat…so…can I bring anything up for you…?” Robin kindly asked.

“I’m okay.” Anna replied softly as Robin smiled and nodded.

“You should get some rest then.” Robin suggested as she walked towards her mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“I feel like I’ve gotten a month’s worth of sleep already.” Anna laughed groggily as Robin walked towards the door.

Just before walking out, Robin turned to her mother and smiled. “I’ve got tons of school books if you’re interested in reading.” She teased, before walking out of the room.

Anna sat there, on the bed and smiled to herself. She looked over at the bag that Robin had left on the floor besides the bed and paused. After a few seconds, she took a deep breath and reached for the bag. She grimaced as she put a hand on her wound momentarily, and then lifted herself up again. She carefully opened the bag and searched through Robin’s books. As she was doing so, she fell upon a small portrait tucked in one of the pockets of the bag. Anna hesitatingly pulled it out and stared down at the picture. The picture was one of Robin, Robert and herself. Anna’s eyes instantly filled with small tears.

Just as she was about to put down the picture, a small piece of paper that had been tucked inside the small frame fell out. Anna reached to get the folded piece of paper and held it in her hand. She pondered whether to look at it or not but her curiosity finally won. She carefully unfolded the small piece of paper and stared at the first word at the top. “Robin,” she read softly.

Anna swallowed back her emotions as she read the note.

“It's not the ache you told me about-- it's bigger. There's nothing inside me without you. I work and eat and sleep, but none of it matters because my heart’s with you.” Anna read softly.

A sad look came up on her face as she looked up and sighed inwardly. She looked down at the bottom of the page and paused as a tear of compassion – for her daughter, for her pain, for her past – rolled down her cheek.

--

Jason was busy looking inside a closet while talking to Sonny, who was sitting on the couch.

“Do you have it?” Sonny asked him with a sigh of amusement.

“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said you kept everything of mine.” Jason spoke from the closet.

“Well you left most of it in your apartment. What was I supposed to do with all this stuff?” Sonny asked with a laugh.

“Throw it away.” Jason replied as simply as possible as he took a few blankets out of the closet.

“Jason…” Sonny started as he stared at him with a smile. “Some things will never change.” He finally spoke as he shook his head.

“Why should they?” Jason said half-smiling, half-asking.

“Because things change. People too.” Sonny replied thoughtfully as he searched Jason’s face for a reaction.

Jason put the blankets on the side of the couch. The two men paused and Jason went back to the closet to get a pillow.

“Besides, it’s not like you owned a lot of things, Jason.” Sonny reminded him nonchalantly. “And the things you did own must have meant something unless you wouldn’t have kept them. So, it wasn’t my place to throw them away. I had Benny bring all of it here.” He told him as he walked over to the table and picked up a glass of water.

Jason kneeled on the floor and grabbed a pillow. Just as he did so, he noticed something lying on the ground underneath. Not in a million years had he expected to find this here. He didn’t even remember he had kept this in the first place. But, of course he had. He had kept everything Robin ever gave him. As angry as he’d been at her, he’d never been able to throw anything of hers away.

Jason stared at the yellow piece of plastic as his heart skipped a beat. He was so taken aback by the flood of memories that spread into him that he didn’t even hear Sonny calling out his name.

“Jason?” Sonny called out again from the other side of the room.

Jason finally looked up with a facial expression that intrigued Sonny.

“Are you alright?” he asked, cautiously.

“Yes.” Jason managed to say as he regained his speech. “Yes, I’m fine.” He assured Sonny.

“Alright.” Sonny nodded. “I’m beat. I doubt I’ll be sleeping, but if there’s anything, I’ll be upstairs.” He told Jason as he climbed up the stairs.

Jason barely nodded as his attention turned back to the closet. He slowly reached his hand into the darkness and picked up a bright, yellow helmet. He sat on the floor and leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes, holding the helmet in his hands.

--

Robin walked back into her room and sat on her bed, exhaustingly. She stared at the ceiling for a few minutes and then glanced at the night table. She frowned her famous curious frown as she noticed a small piece of paper lying there. She sat up and reached for it. As soon as her fingers brushed the paper, she knew. She didn’t have to open it to know what that was. She didn’t know how this had gotten there, but in that instant, she didn’t care.

A small tear rolled down her face all the way to her collarbone, as she read the piece of paper to herself. Robin closed her eyes and folded back the letter.
R: It's easy. I......missed......you. Remember when I told you in the summer, when you kissed me I felt it on my mouth hours later? The same thing happens now. When I'm studying and I'm alone, I just...I close my eyes and I think about you...phantom kisses. I miss you so much. Every minute of every day.
J: You know, that's what I said (sighs) in this letter.....I never sent you.
R: Do you still have it?
J: It's in my jacket.
R: (looking surprised and pleased) Let me see it, please?
(Jason gets the letter out of his jacket, gives it to Robin and starts to fidget around, embarrassed, putting his hands up to his face again and covering his eyes for a moment.)
R: (reading the letter) It's not the ache you told me about-- it's bigger. There's nothing inside me without you. I work and eat and sleep and-- (looks up from the letter) What's this word that's crossed out right here?
J: Ah..(stalling)...fight.
R: Jason ...(looking very worried.)
J: Don't worry, Sonny made me stop. It's not doing me any good. Go ahead, finish.
R: I work and eat and sleep and none of it matters because my heart's with you. (starting to cry)
J: That's why I didn't send it. (looking as if Robin's hurt will break his heart) I don't want you to hurt, Robin.
R: But, I do. You know, so much sometimes I even wonder if it's even worth it.
J: Of course it is. I mean you love school. I can tell.
R: I love you more.
Robin re-opened her tearful eyes and brought the letter close to her heart, and held it there as she took a deep breath.

--

Jason lied on his back on the couch, staring at the ceiling. He didn’t even hear the clock ring at midnight. He simply turned his head slightly enough to look at the helmet he’d carefully placed on the table. He folded his arms and remembered the day that Robin gave this to him.

Behind him – and behind the couch – standing in the stairs, unbeknownst to him, stood Robin, leaning against the wall. She watched him as a flood of memories overcame her.

(Want to see what both, Robin and Jason are thinking about? Take a look at this…you will need RealPlayer to view this... http://members.tripod.com/slideshows2000/dancewithlife.ram )

Just as Robin was about to walk back upstairs, quietly, Jason heard her footsteps in the stairs. He quickly turned around as their eyes met in the intensity of the night.
