Subject: DANCE WITH LIFE -- chapter 12

CHAPTER 12 –

A few rays of sunlight came tugged at the window and sneaked its way inside the living room, bringing to life the entire room. Anna slowly stirred on the couch before finally opening her eyes and yawning. She initially shielded her face from the light, but quickly became accustomed to it.

She carefully lifted herself up in a seating position and looked around herself. It suddenly dawned upon herself that she had fallen asleep on the couch the night before. She was completely alone in the living room, although, she heard noises coming from the kitchen.

Her curiosity was picked. She looked around the room, searching for something, when her eyes finally landed on a clock hanging on the wall. It was barely six o’clock. She hadn’t gotten much sleep, but she knew the others had probably gotten even less. Besides, she was feeling much better.

Anna heard some more noise and decided to venture in the kitchen on her own, to see who was already up. She held her breath as she tried to lift herself up from the couch. She held her bandage with one of her hands and leaned on the table with the other. Her face twisted in pain for an instant but it seemed to get better as she walked through the room. With her hair tied up in a messy ponytail, she slowly made her way to the kitchen, where she found an unknowing Sonny making breakfast. Anna paused in the doorway and observed him with a slightly surprised and slightly confused expression on her face. She found herself smiling for a moment and then reminded herself that she was standing there in a pair of sweat pants and dirty t-shirt. The thought merely crossed her mind before it completely vanished from it. She didn’t care. Why should she?

Still, Anna was amused by what she was seeing. Not exactly how she had expected Sonny Corinthos to behave around the kitchen – or around her for that matter.

She then looked around but there was no sign of Robin, nor Jason. After a while, she decided to walk in, quietly and she approached the table. When she started pulling on a chair, Sonny immediately turned around.

“Good morning…” Anna spoke as she held her breath, sitting down.

“What are you doing up? You shouldn’t be walking like…” he started and then stopped as he noticed the look she threw him. “I’ll never learn.” He then smiled as he shook his head.

“What do you mean?” Anna asked him with a confused and curious expression in her eyes.

“I’ll bet you hate being told what to do, especially when it’s from a guy like me. Am I right?” He asked as he leaned back against the counter.

“Right.” Anna said, positively.

Sonny could not help the tiny smile that came over his lips.

“Like mother, like daughter.” He said, almost to himself. “Some coffee?” he then asked as he handed her a cup.

“So, this is the dangerous mobster everyone has been warning me about…” Anna said as she took the cup.

“Well, if you put it so bluntly…” Sonny replied, not sure if she was kidding or not, as he sat down in front of her.

“It’s okay.” Anna smiled, interrupting him. “I was married to one.” She told him, nonchalantly.

“Were you expecting tyrant Corinthos and machine guns Morgan?” Sonny asked, in his unique, constant low voice.

“No.” Anna replied in the simplest manner.

“Most people do.” Sonny seriously replied.

“I’m not most people.” She replied, calmly, and then paused.

Sonny leaned back in his chair. Avoiding Anna’s eyes, he stared down at the table, clenching his jaw in true Sonny fashion. He paused like that for a while and then took a shallow breath.

“Whatever it is you have been warned about me…it’s probably true.” He spoke in a low, thoughtful voice. “The good, the bad, the uncertain…all of it.” He added seriously. “And there’s a lot more that you haven’t heard and surely never will. In the world where I live, you trust no one.” Sonny pointed out, as his eyes grew darker and more pained as he spoke. “There are a lot of things that I do that I’m not too proud of, but that’s the way it is. It’s my life. It’s me. And I would do these things all over if I had to.” Anna listened carefully and attentively as Sonny talked. “Even if it means hurting some people. There are some times…where I don’t have a choice.” He said in a low voice. “But that’s what happens.” Sonny continued as he breathed inwardly. “The people I touch somehow always have a tendency to suffer because of me…if not have their lives ripped from their arms.”

“That’s not true.” Anna said, aware of the sceptical look Sonny was throwing her from across the table. She didn’t know anything about this man, but she could tell that this wasn’t true. “Robin’s still here.” She spoke softly, reminding him that not everybody is lost to him.

“Yeah…” Sonny said as he cleared his throat. “But that’s only because she was intelligent enough to leave and get away while she still could.” He said in a sad tone.

“Look,” Anna started, rising in her chair, searching for his eyes. “I know what you do for a living. I’ve seen it firsthand. I know how that business works.” She told him in all seriousness.

“But you don’t know me.” He reminded her, defensively.

“I don’t need to. I know enough.” Anna spoke directly. “I know Robin.” She added calmly.

“I don’t know how good of a reference that is after what Jason and I did to her…”

“Oh, it’s a good enough reference.” Anna argued, softly. “I don’t know what went down – or what happened between you and her, or Jason and her…or you and Jason for that matter…but I don’t need to.” Anna said and then paused, staring into his dramatically dark expression. “All I need to do is look into my daughter’s eyes when speaks about the two of you. She trusts you…or else we wouldn’t be here. Believe me.” She added in perfect English, which kept Sonny’s attention even more. “No matter what happened, I can see you’re important to her – you and Jason. And I know that it wouldn’t be the case if you were both the people you just described to me.”

“Originally, I don’t think we’re good people.” Sonny confessed in a low, careful tone.

“Robin thinks you are, and that’s all that matters. I trust that.” Anna said, determinedly.

“That’s because she’s what makes us good.” Sonny softly spoke out loud as he lowered his eyes to his cup of coffee.

--

The waves came crashing on the shore, one by one, under the burning morning sky. A soft breeze softly came blowing through the terrace, awaking the world as it passed by. In the middle of the terrace, asleep in a big lounging chair, was Jason. His left arm was wrapped around a sleeping Robin, whose head was quietly resting on Jason’s chest. After the emotionally draining evening they’d had, they both obviously had fallen asleep on the terrace, in each other’s arms.

Things were far from being totally fixed, but at least they both knew they had taken a step in the right direction. And somehow, they didn’t need words to express it. They just knew it…just like they always did.

Robin slowly began to stir in the chair and opened her eyes carefully. It took her a few seconds to remember where she was, but when she did, she yawned and lifted herself up slightly. She looked up and saw Jason’s eyes open softly as she looked at him. She sat up, lifting herself off of his chest, but she felt him take a strong, deep breath as her hand rested on his chest.

She couldn’t help but smile to him, shyly at first and then genuinely.

Jason smiled back, sleepily and stared back at her for a few seconds, without saying anything.

“Hi…” he finally spoke in a sleepy voice.

“Hi…” Robin barely murmured.

Their eyes locked under the bright morning sun and they seemed at a loss for words for a while.

“I’m sorry…” Robin said with an amused frown as she ran a hand through her messy hair.

“What for?” Jason asked, a bit confused.

“I think I drooled on you.” She teased as she saw a smile spread across his face.

“Well, you don’t see me complaining…” he softly replied.

Robin smiled and got up, standing before him as he got up as well.

“About last night…” she started as she looked at him with a serious look in her eyes. “I’m glad that we talked.” She told him.

“Me too.” He answered.

“And,” she surprised herself by saying, as she smiled to herself softly. “I’m glad you didn’t kiss me.” She confessed.

“You are?” Jason asked, reluctantly as he tried to read her eyes.

“Yeah…” she softly spoke while she lowered her eyes. “’Cause I think I would have enjoyed it…a lot.” She added in all honesty.

“And that would have been a bad thing?”

Robin hesitated for a minute, staring into his eyes, trying to form a coherent answer – one that would not only make sense to him but to herself as well.

“Last night, it would have…yeah.” She truthfully responded. “There are just so many things that we still need to figure out. Jason…” Robin spoke from the heart. “We can’t just pick up where we left off.”

“I agree.” He said in a low voice.

“We need to…” she started and then stopped herself, shaking her head. “I don’t know what we need.” She told him in pure honesty. “I don’t know what I ant either. One second I want you to kiss me….and the next I don’t, because I want to take this one step at a time…and then I forget about all of that and I have no idea what I want.” She said with a soft laugh directed at herself.

Jason nodded as he smiled to himself, perfectly understanding what Robin was talking about.

“Well,” Jason started with a funny face. “How about some bacon?” he asked and Robin laughed wholeheartedly.

“That sounds slightly interesting…” she said, nodding gently.

“I see…how about some pancakes?” he then added, amused.

“Well, now, you really have my attention…keep going.” She grinned as she tilted her head slightly.

“Wait. I got it.” Jason told her. “Chocolate ice cream. I know Sonny keeps some everywhere even if he doesn’t even like it.” He said and Robin laughed.

“Now, you’ll have to race me to the fridge!” She laughed as he smiled down to her.

They stayed silent for a moment, looking at each other. The world once again disappeared around them. That tended to happen a lot when they were together like this…like they used to be.

“Thank you.” Robin whispered in a heartfelt tone.

Jason looked at her with all the care in the world and whispered back:

“For what? I didn’t do anything.”

Robin smiled kindly.

“You always used to say that, and it was never true.” She spoke softly as she stared into his eyes. “It still isn’t.” she whispered to him.

Jason stared down at her for a minute and then took a step aside.

“Come on, let’s feed you.” He said, turning away from her momentarily.

But he was stopped. He felt Robin’s hand slip into h is and pull on his arm tenderly. Jason stopped and turned to face her again as his voice trailed off in the wind. The intensity in Robin’s eyes almost disarmed him instantly. He hadn’t seen those eyes in such a long time, but he recognized them so well. The warmth of her fingers against his sent shivers down his bare back. He froze as his eyes locked with hers, and slowly – ever so slowly – Robin moved towards him. She carefully lifted herself up and brought her face closer to his. Silently, she brushed her lips against his in the most emotional, simplest, most tender kiss he’d ever tasted. Softly, almost reluctantly, she pulled away from him and looked at his face. His eyes were still closed, and after a second, he finally opened them, only to see her standing there.

“What was that for?” he asked, trying to hide the satisfaction and surprise of her gesture.

“No reason.” Robin spoke, as if she had surprised herself as well with the kiss. “I suddenly really wanted to kiss you.” She spoke, mentally reminding herself how to breathe.

The intensity filled the space between them and Jason found himself taking a step closer to her. Almost instinctively, he leaned forward. His hand reached for her waist as she stared, expectantly, in his eyes. Their lips danced around each other, tentatively at first, but just as they were about to kiss again, a noise was heard throughout the terrace.

The interruption startled both of them as they pulled away slightly. It took them a few seconds to realize that Jason’s cell phone was ringing. Jason, feeling a bit disoriented by the look remaining in Robin’s eyes, noticed his cell phone resting on the table and he went to pick it up.

“Yeah.” He answered, a bit absently.

Robin looked at him from across the terrace as his face turned serious.

“Alright, thanks.” He spoke, dryly. “Let me know what you find.” He said before hanging up.

“Does this have something to do with my mother?” Robin quickly inquired, worriedly.

--

Robin and Jason came walking into the kitchen as saw Anna and Sonny sitting at the table in silence. As soon as Anna saw her daughter’s expression, she knew that something had happened.

“What is it?” Anna asked, impatiently.

Robin looked at her and then back and forth between her and Jason.

“The car that ran you over has been found.” Jason informed her.

“Where?” Sonny then proceeded in asking.

“Near the docks.” Jason told him.

Sonny thought for a moment.

“Did Johnny find anything else?” he asked.

“He’s working on it.” Jason said.

“Who’s Johnny?” Anna pitched in, trying to keep up with the conversation as best as she could.

“He works for Sonny.” Robin replied, simply, and Anna understood not to ask anything more about it.

Mother and daughter exchanged a look as Jason and Sonny discussed their next move.

“Wait,” Robin then said, cutting in. “Are we safe here?” she asked. “I mean, can we be sure that nobody knows that my mother is here?” she demanded to know.

“Very few people know that this place even exists.” Sonny said trying to reassure her.

“Are you sure?” Robin added.

“I won’t let anything happen to you…” Sonny said as he looked at her, lovingly.

Anna watched them and almost saw a fatherly trait in Sonny as he looked at her daughter. For some reason, she wasn’t surprised though.

“What about…” Jason started and then hesitated before finishing his sentence. He looked at Robin and then back at Sonny. “What about Carly?” he asked, seriously.

“What about her?” Sonny asked, trying to be as dry as possible.

“She knows about this place. Can you make sure she doesn’t track you down here?” Jason asks, knowing perfectly well that if he’d look at Robin right now, he’d probably see a look on her face that he’d rather not see.

“Carly won’t be a problem.” Sonny replied as he cleared his throat.

“Okay,” Anna pitched in once again with a confused frown. “Can anyone enlighten me here? Who’s Carly?” she asked, looking at the two men and then at Robin.

Robin hesitated for a while and took a deep breath.

“Carly is…” she started and thought for a second. “Carly is an old…friend.” She finally spoke, deciding that now wasn’t the time to explain everything to her mother.

There was an awkward silence between Jason, Robin and Sonny – an awkwardness that Anna quickly noticed.

“Anna, you are safe here. I won’t let anything happen to you, or Robin.” Sonny said trying to reassure everyone. “I’ll make sure of that.”

“Oh – Are you?” a familiar voice sceptically exclaimed from the doorway.

Robin, Jason, Anna and Sonny all turned around to face the intruder, only to find Carly standing there, staring at them. Her eyes were riveted on Robin.

Let me know if you still want more of this...
