CHAPTER 2 –

“What?! What happened?” Robin asked, concern filling her every word.

“It’s nothing,” Anna replied with a reassuring tone. “I’m fine.” She added. “I really am.” She repeated, as the fear didn’t disappear from Robin’s face.

“How can you say that?” Mac said as he stood beside them in the middle of the room.

“It was nothing.” Anna repeated softly. “It was just some juvenile kid probably trying to impress his friends. Really, some amateur work.” She said trying to bring a smile to their faces but couldn’t.

“So, you don’t think it has anything to do with…” Felicia pitched in as she stood near the couch.

“No.” Anna quickly said. “No, it had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to me in the recent months. That’s over now, thank God.” She said as she squeezed Robin’s hands.

Even though Mac and Felicia were estranged, Felicia had wanted to be there for Robin’s return that night.

Anna held on to Robin’s hands and they both sat down on the couch.

“But you’re okay, right? I mean, you’re sure?” Robin insisted lovingly.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Anna smiled at her daughter.

“You never answered my question. What happened?” Mac asked again in his usual caring yet protective tone.

“You’re still as stubborn as you always were.” Anna sighed as Felicia and Robin smiled.

“Yes he is.” Robin grinned, siding with her mother.

“I’m not stubborn, I am concerned.” Mac said in his defense.

“Oh yes you are!” Robin laughed. “Don’t even get me started on this one…”

“Look who’s talking.” Mac argued playfully. “She’s your daughter 100%.” He added, addressing himself to Anna now. “You think I’m stubborn… You should have seen her when she was a teenager…” Mac said and as soon as the words escaped his mouth he realized what he’d just said.

The room came to an awkward silence. Anna turned to face Robin and smiled sadly as she reached to touch her daughter’s face with her fingers.

“Yes, I should have…” she whispered in a sad voice.

“It’s okay.” Robin whispered, holding her mother’s hands. “It’s okay.” She mouthed again, this time with a gentle smile.

Anna took a deep breath and looked into her daughter’s eyes for a while. After a few seconds, she sighed and turned back to Mac and Felicia.

“To answer your question,” she began, as she faced Mac. “Because I know you won’t let this go until you know just about everything. I was walking around and I ended up on this bridge…” she started telling them what happened.

“A bridge…?” Robin whispered, almost not meaning to say that out loud.

“Yes. It’s not that far from here. Very beautiful and calm…” Anna recalled.

“I know.” Robin smiled softly.

Anna looked at her daughter and saw the little sparkle in Robin’s eyes as she said these words. Anna then continued to tell them what had happened.

“And then after a while, a boy just came out of nowhere, with a knife and he attacked me.” Anna said as she noticed the horrified look on Robin’s face. “He wanted my wallet, that’s all.” She added.

“And you said it was nothing.” Robin said in a concerned and disbelieving tone.

Anna looked down for a moment.

“I didn’t want to scare you.” She softly said taking Robin’s hands into hers again.

“Mom…” Robin whispered.

“I’m alright. Everything turned out alright.” She reassured her daughter calmly.

“So, what happened? Did you call the police?” Felicia asked, curious.

“Everything happened so fast.” Anna said, remembering the events on the bridge. “This young man came out and helped me get him off of me.” She said in a calm voice. “He grabbed the knife away from him and scared him off. Said a few words and he left.”

“You mean a stranger saved your life? And then walked away?” Robin said half-surprised, half-grateful.

Anna nodded as she looked at her daughter.

“I don’t know. There was something about him.” Anna said as she frowned. “He had this strange expression on his face, like he knew me, or recognized me from somewhere. He seemed concerned.” She recalled as she tried to think back at Jason’s face.

“You didn’t recognize him from somewhere?” Mac asked her.

“No.” Anna replied, thoughtful. “He was tall, short hair, riding a bike.” She continued. “This guy, Jason, just came out of nowhere…” she added as Robin’s facial expression changed from attentive to stunned.

“Jason?” Mac asked a bit surprised.

By that time, Robin’s shock had worn off and she was now simply looking down at the floor in front of her. Felicia remained silent.

“Yes.” Anna said.

“I thought that Jason left town a few months ago…?” Felicia thought out loud.

“So did I.” Mac said, as his tone grew serious.

Anna looked back and forth between Felicia and Mac before turning to Robin. It took a split-second for Anna to see that there was something she wasn’t being told about this guy.

“Did you know him?” She asked the three of them.

Neither Mac nor Felicia felt it was their place to answer or say anything. So much had happened and it wasn’t theirs to tell.

“A long time ago.” Robin whispered, forcing a little smile. “But it doesn’t matter.” She added as she sighed inwardly and squeezed her mother’s hands. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“I’m just glad you’re here.” Anna said as she hugged her tight. Anna slightly pulled away and looked at her daughter. “You look tired, you must be exhausted after that flight.”

Robin nodded and got up to go upstairs and get some rest. Robin hugged her mom once again and closed her eyes. If anything had happened to her, she doesn’t know what she would have done. Mourning her parents once had nearly drained her of everything she had. Mourning her twice would have probably killed her. She couldn’t bare to lose her again. Not now. She sighed as she held her mom tight for a little while, as her thoughts quickly turned to Jason. Of all the people in Port Charles, he is probably the last person she expected her mom to get acquainted with – if talking to Jason for two seconds counted as getting acquainted with that is.

Anna softly pulled away and saw the somber look in Robin’s eyes. Even though she was trying to hide it, the mention of Jason’s name still got to her in a way that she knew she’d have to face someday. Just not today. She was too tired to let her mind drift off to memories of him.

“Is everything okay? Did I say something?” Anna asked, concerned about her daughter.

“No.” Robin smiled genuinely. “No…”

“Is it this Jason person? Ever since I mentioned him…”

“No.” Robin said softly, looking down. “I’m just glad someone was there for you.” She said before saying goodnight and walking upstairs.

Anna watched her daughter climb up the stairs in silence and then turned to Mac and Felicia.

“So…” Anna said as she looked at both of them. “What should I know about this guy – Jason? It’s like everybody’s mood changed around here all of a sudden.” She said as a matter-of-factly.

“Nothing.” Mac said a bit too coldly for Felicia’s taste.

“Mac…” she said as she gave him a look.

“What?” Anna said, raising her eyebrows as she looked back and forth between them. “He seemed…nice…in a way.” She said calmly.

“There’s nothing nice about Jason Morgan.” Mac said, almost sorry he had to say it like that.

“Morgan.” Anna said, finally getting some piece of information in this debate.

“That’s not true.” Felicia said, looking at Mac.

“He’s a dangerous mobster.” Mac said.

“He’s what?!” Anna exclaimed but didn’t seem to get a response from neither Mac nor Felicia.

“He’s not dangerous.” Felicia softly said as she sighed and shook her head.

“Well, he works for Sonny Corinthos and that is a definition of dangerous in and out of itself.” Mac retorted.

“He used to work for Sonny.” Felicia argued. “We don’t know now… Besides, it’s irrelevant.” Felicia exasperatingly said as she looked at Anna.

There was a short silence in the room, until Anna broke it, putting down her glass of water on the table.

“So you know him.” Anna concluded. “What I want to know is why Robin got this…” Anna breathed deeply as she searched for the right word. “This… look in her eyes when I mentioned him. Were they friends?”

“You could say that.” Mac said calmly. “Look, I better go upstairs and see if she needs any help unpacking or something.” Mac said, not really liking where this discussion was heading, especially with the animosity already there between him and Felicia.

“Okay.” Anna said as he walked upstairs.

Anna turned back towards Felicia only to see the look on her face. She looked like she had more to say but was holding it back for some reason.

“What?” Anna asked as she looked at her, intrigued.

“They were a lot more than that.” Felicia finally said softly as she imagined the disapproving look Mac would be giving her if he was still in the living room. “Robin and Jason, I mean.”

“Oh.” Anna said softly as she realized what Felicia had meant. “You mean…”

Felicia nodded.

Anna sat on the couch, realizing just how much she didn’t know about her daughter’s life and how much she had missed. It was like rubbing it in and it kept hurting because there is absolutely nothing she could do about this constant guilt.

“Was that before or after…you know…Stone?” Anna asked, a bit uneasy.

“After.” Felicia whispered as she sat down on the other couch.

There was a long silence between them as Anna looked down, probably processing everything that she was learning so quickly.

“But Robin said that…” Anna started. “She said that she didn’t have anybody right now…”

“She doesn’t.” Felicia confirmed.

Anna hesitated before asking but she couldn’t help it.

“What happened?”

“It’s complicated.” Felicia sighed. Anna nodded, understanding that maybe Felicia wasn’t the right person to ask about this. Felicia sensed that Anna’s mind was racing through everything she was processing and took a deep breath. “The reason why you might think he looked familiar was because he is a Quartermaine. Or at least he was.” Felicia added after a little while.

“I thought you said he was Jason Morgan?” Anna asked a bit confused.

“A couple of years ago, right after Stone died and Robin learned she was HIV +, Jason and AJ Quartermaine were involved in a car accident.” Felicia began telling the story. “When Jason woke up, he couldn’t remember anything about his life – his family, his friends, his past.”

“I know a little bit about that.” Anna whispered to herself.

“He didn’t know how to care, how to feel or even how to act in certain circumstances. Until he met Robin.” Felicia said as she smiled to herself, remembering how Jason used to be at first. “Robin was the only one who ever understood him, really. And he did the same thing for her I guess. After Stone died….it’s like a part of Robin died with him. The best part.” She added. A short pause came between them before Felicia continued. “I don’t know…” she whispered. “She taught Jason how to feel, and how to care and love…and he taught her how to live again.” She looked at Anna, who seemed moved by Felicia’s words. “The boy who’d lost his past, and the girl who thought she’d lost her future.” Felicia quietly spoke. “They became best friends, and eventually, it turned into more.” Felicia paused and lowered her eyes as she spoke again. “It was them against the world.”

“What do you mean?” Anna asked in a barely audible voice.

“I mean Mac. I mean the Quartermaines, Jason’s friends, Robin’s friends…everybody. Everybody saw the loved each other, even Mac can admit that. But…nobody really got it.”

Anna had a sad look printed on her face as she listened to Felicia’s words.

“What happened?” she asked softly.

Felicia paused, careful to choose her words properly. “The world won.” She whispered regretfully.

Robin stood in the dark, staring out the window at the bright stars in the skies and closed her eyes.
-------------------
Jason: I don’t know. Maybe my dreams are different than yours. But if I never saw you again, you’d still be the most important thing in my life.
Robin: I wanna be in your future Jason.
Jason: You will. No matter what. (Whispers) Because we’re a part of each other.
Robin: Always.
Jason: Always.

--
Robin: I just came here to say goodbye. So much happened in this place. I just had to see it one last time before I let it go. Do you remember that night--
Jason: I remember everything, Robin. That was my life-- what I learned from Sonny, and loving you. Til Michael.
Robin: I didn't do it to take Michael away from you. You know that. You know me.
Jason: It's just like after the accident. When I woke up, you were the first person I ever saw. But I didn't know you. And I don't now. I came to say good-bye, too. You taught me that, just like you taught me to love. You gave me everything good I have inside. And now I have it to give to Michael. I will always owe you for that.
Robin: You gave me a lot, too.
Jason: And I never wanted you to go before. But I do now. It'll be much easier when you're in Paris. And it'll be a lot easier if I never see your face again.
---------------

Jason stood in the doorway at Jakes, staring up at the sky in silence.
