Educational assistants walked off the job three weeks ago

A tentative agreement was reached late Thursday to end the 22-day-long strike by the educational assistants who work for the Thames Valley District school board.

The deal was announced by Bill Bryce, the board's director.

"It is hoped that the ratification process will be speedy and that we can return our schools to a normal schedule as quickly as possible," he said in a release.

No details of the agreement were announced.

More than 850 EAs walked off the job May 12.

The assistants, who help special-needs kids, are paid for a maximum of six hours a day. They wanted to be paid for seven hours a day, which they say is closer to their actual workload.

In an interview on A Channel, CUPE Ontario head Sid Ryan - who had face-to-face talks with Bryce - declined to say if the EAs achieved their goal.

"I can't talk about that," he said.

A second round of talks aimed at ending the strike broke off on May 23. The settlement will have to be approved by the board's trustees, as well as the CUPE local that represents the EAs
