Mayor Boris Johnson, the police and Transport for London (TfL) are undertaking a six-year campaign to improve motorcyclist’s safety. The campaign also markedly aims to crack down on motorcyclists speeding. Mr Johnson said “We’re committed to make London’s roads as safe as possible for motorcyclists.”

The Met’s Motorcycle Tasking Team will set up “high-visibility operations” to deter motorists from committing offences that often result in rider injury. Publicity campaigns will urge motorists to make greater efforts to look out for motorcyclists when performing manoeuvres. TfL will produce new design guidance resulting in roads that are safer for riders.

TfL will also install new rear-facing speed cameras on the A13 and at other locations to deter motorcyclists from speeding. This could have a potential negative impact – the current Congestion Charge cameras are front-facing. How long before rear-facing cameras are considered, despite election pledges?
