Date Posted: 05:00:41 04/22/14 Tue The points system for world endurance championship races has been radically changed for 2014, with additional ‘longevity’ points awarded during the 24-hour races, putting a huge bias towards the French rounds. The winner of a 24 hour race receives 40 points, with 35 points going to the winners of 8 or 12 hour races, with the ‘longevity’ 10 point bonus going to the team leading at the 8 and 16 hour stages of the 24 hour rounds. There are no bonus points for the shorter races. This means that if a team dominates the two (French) 24 hour rounds, they do not need to take part in the other three races in the championship: Total points available from the Bol d’Or and Le Mans: 120 points Total points available from Suzuka, Oschersleben and Qatar: 105 points A former World Endurance Press Officer said “This is why World Endurance will never get back to being a serious championship. FG Sport tried – and came close to succeeding – back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. But the French organisers – and lets face it, these are the ones that everyone associates with endurance racing – did not like control being taken away and pulled out, setting up their own rival series. Now they have made what is left even more of a mockery by effectively making the other rounds a potential waste of time. Suzuka is a one-off filled with unusual teams and classes. Which leaves Oschersleben and Qatar being treated like non-events." [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
