Date Posted: 04:43:51 07/10/14 Thu Norton is launching a skills academy to build motorcycles at it’s HQ at Donington Hall. The company is looking to recruit 40 apprentices by September, when the three-year course will begin. It eventually plans to take in 100 trainees a year. Apprentices will be taught the skills to produce all the components that make up a motorcycle. Norton owner Stuart Garner said "We want to make a 100 per cent British-made motorcycle," he said. "But this is hard to do because there's no way of buying some of the parts in the UK. We don't have any suspension or brake manufacturing here. This is because there's not the skills in this country any more. We need to do something about it.” Mr Garner added "We didn't want to do another classroom-based course. We want the guys to come and get their hands dirty and make parts for motorcycles." Other manufacturers will be able to use the academy.
