Date Posted: 04:49:38 10/01/14 Wed Hugh Cairns, a surgeon whose pioneering work into crash helmet development, has had a Blue Plaque erected at his former home in Loughton, Essex. Cairns was part of the surgical team who were unable to save Laurence of Arabia from injuries caused by his crash in 1935. Cairns began studying head injuries caused by motorcycle accidents. His research led to crash helmets being issued to Army motorcyclists, who were compelled to wear them by law from 1941. Cairns died in 1953, 20 years before mandatory helmet wear was introduced for civilian riders. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
