The Titanic's roof was planked. There will be those who speculate that it was dark because of either a protective coating over the top or deck planks. I have one picture that shows the edges of planks hanging over the edge of the roof while the ship was under construction. I would go with the planks. There would be no steel over the roofs in these cases because of the binnacle compass and wood does not keep the heat like dark painted roofs do. This is one of the purposes for planking roofs that also serve as an area that could be walked on. It isulated the rooms below against the heat of the sun. These planks would probably have been a toungue and groove type of construction to provide waterproofing. I have more pictures on the way that may show if there are planks better but it'll be a few weeks.
