The ship was outdated, the passenger trade was down because of the depression, the hull had hair line cracks around some of the upper hull plate rivets, The motor mounts were worn and had to be continuously repaired-when they got to it, the roofs were leaking. These are just a few of the things wrong. The ship had just been used so hard that it wasn't worth repairing. Besides she was a leftover from the White Star line and Cunard kind of treated them like red headed step children I think.
