Dickenman Signs Six Total Student-Athletes for Next Season

May 18, 2006

New Britain, CT - Head men's basketball coach Howie Dickenman announced today that five additional players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Blue Devils for the 2006-07 season. The five players will join guard Jeremy Myers who signed during the early signing period in the fall. Myers will be joined by junior college transfers Dannie Powell (Stratford, CT/Carl Albert State College) and Alen Redzic (Bronx, NY/Jacksonville (TX) College) and incoming freshmen Joe Seymore (Newcastle, DE/Hodgson), Piankhi Hutchinson (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) and Mitchell Bouie (Chicago, IL/Marist).

"These six student-athletes compile one of the largest recruiting classes we have ever signed in my 10 seasons at Central Connecticut," Dickenman said. "We are bringing in some size to add to our frontcourt and also some backcourt players to help fill the void left by our two graduating seniors, Justin Chiera and Lenny Jefferson. We have some spots to fill in our lineup and several of these players could fill key positions for us next season. Our staff has worked hard to help bring in this class, we are pleased with the results."

Powell is a 6-0, 175 pound guard who played at Stratford High School before spending a year at Wilbraham & Monson Academy and two years at Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Oklahoma. He was a Hartford Courant and CHCSA First-Team All-State selection at Stratford in his senior year in 2003 and also a Connecticut Post Super-15 selection as a senior. He was also a CHCSA All-State pick as a junior and a Courant Second-Team All-State selection in the same year. Powell was twice named All-Area by the New Haven Register and was a three-time All-League selection who averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists in his final high school season. Last season at Carl Albert he averaged 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in 28 games played. He converted 92-of-117 free throw attempts, good for an impressive 78.6 percent from the stripe.

Seymore is a 6-3 lefthanded guard/forward out of Hodgson High School in Newark, DE. As a senior he led his team to the semifinals of the state tournament averaging 18.3 points per game for the 22-4 Silver Eagles. The senior captain was a First-Team All-State selection following this season and was an All-Conference selection in each of the last two seasons.

Redzic is a 6-6, 235 pound forward who played in 2003-04 and 2004-05 at Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas before sitting out last season. A native of Yugoslavia, he played at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx and is the strongest and most physical of the incoming players.

Hutchinson was regarded as one of the top shot blockers in New York City last season, he is a 6-7, 205 pound forward. He helped lead Carnasie to the PSAL semi-finals in his senior season. Hutchinson is a native of Trinidad. He averaged eight rebounds a game in the PSAL playoffs and his team finished 21-3 overall and 15-1 in PSAL action.

Bouie, a 6-2, 200 pound small forward, was a First-Team All-Conference selection at Marist (Chicago) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference as a senior last season. He was also an All-Conference pick as a junior. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the postseason Blue-Red all-star game which featured the top seniors in the area. He scored 21 points, 18 in the second half, and was named MVP. Bouie, known for his strength and athleticism, was a three year starter for Marist. His U17 AAU team won a national championship a year ago.

Myers, a 6-1, 180 pound, guard from the Bullis School in Potomac, MD, signed an NLI with the Blue Devils last fall, prior to his senior season. He is from Ft. Washington, MD, and played at The Bullis School. Following his senior season he was named to the IAC All-League team following a 19-6 season. He averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game as a senior. He participated in the District vs. Suburban Scholarship All-Star game at the Capital Classic in Washington, D.C., in April scoring nine points, grabbing four rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording four steals against some of the best competition in the Maryland-Virginia area.

I am super pleased with the late period signings. Getting 3 Forwards and a left Hander is excellent.. It looks like Redzic and Hutchinson wil fit in nicely. Excellent!!!!

This all came out of nowhere; I'm pumped. It looks like we got gritty, hard-nosed guards, and we even managed to land a shot-blocker.
