Central Connecticut State
Feeling sympathy for Georgia Southern is understandable. The Eagles were playing their first game since wide receiver Teddy Craft died in a motorcycle accident in July and were on the field just one day after legendary head coach Erk Russell, who spoke with the team on Thursday night, passed away at the age of 80. But most people still thought the Eagles would hold off Central Connecticut State, and the Blue Devils deserve all the credit in the world for pulling off a shocker in a place where few established I-AA programs ever win. The Blue Devils only beat the Eagles 17-13, but they were in control of the game most of the way. They scored a field goal early in the game, and opened the lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter. Georgia Southern made a run, and took a 13-10 halftime lead on a 51-yard pass from Travis Clark to Darius Smiley as the first half expired. But the Blue Devils did not fade. Aubrey Norris hit Jermaine Roberts with a 54-yard touchdown strike just 2:13 into the second half, and the defense made the score stand up with strong play the rest of the way as Georgia Southern did not advance inside the 30. Central Connecticut State has shared the last two Northeast Conference titles and won at Colgate last year, but they also lost 56-10 to Rhode Island after the Colgate win. This win really puts the program on the map, and an 11-0 season is not out of the question with a game against Southern Connecticut and the Northeast Conference schedule remaining. With this win, an undefeated season would at least make the playoff committee think.

[> San Diego holds No. 1 spot, CCSU moves up to No. 2 -- J.J., 13:57:31 09/11/06 Mon

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - After extending its I-AA best winning streak to 10 games with a 41-7 victory against Dixie State, San Diego once again sits at the top of The Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Top 10. The Toreros earned 15 of a possible 22 first-place votes and 211 points to claim the top spot.

Central Connecticut State scored the biggest win of the weekend and was rewarded with a two-spot jump to the No. 2 position. The Blue Devils won, 17-13, at Georgia Southern and collected seven first-place votes and 200 total points to claim the No. 2 ranking. Dayton holds steady at No. 3, while Monmouth is up two places to No. 4 after a victory against Morgan State. Albany falls three spots to No. 5 after losing to Fordham.

Duquesne drops one position to No. 6, and is followed by Drake at No. 7, Wagner at No. 8, Marist at No. 9 and St. Francis (PA) at No. 10. Marist is back in the rankings this week, while Stony Brook falls out of the top 10.

Nine of the top 10 teams are in action this week, with two games between ranked opponents. No. 6 Duquesne hosts No. 10 St. Francis (PA) and No. 8 Wagner visits No. 9 Marist. In other action, No. 1 San Diego visits Yale and No. 5 Albany is at Delaware.

[> [> polls -- J.J., 16:04:43 09/11/06 Mon

First, congrats to the Blue Devils for getting votes in the national polls. Although CCSU may not be in the top 25, IMO there is no way GSU should remain there either.

Also, how does San Diego remain #1 in the mid-major poll? That's a complete joke. We have strong wins vs. a good team in Marist and of course #13 GSU. The latter win is unprecedented in for "mid-majors." What does USD do? - they beat up on lowly NAIA schools for home games. This is crap. (BTW - I am slowly loathing the "mid-major" term for football. We should strive for inclusion with I-AA, not seperation. The NEC is doing a fine job, but we need to shy away from this term soon.)

San Diego will be in New Haven to face Yale at the Bowl this Saturday. Lets go Elis, beat San Diego!!!!! Maybe someday soon the Bulldogs will invite CCSU for a game at the historic Yale Bowl, instead of the USD, Dayton, or Valpo. That would be great.

Agreed...I hope the term "Mid Major" is dropped! I am starting to see it in the college basketball magazines too...EVEN THE TERM "MINOR"! This has got to stop, especially in college bbal where there is no 1A,1AA,mid major, etc...etc...

Week 3:
USD big over Yale
Albany tops #11 Delaware
Central takes down SCSU
Monmouth routs St. Peter'

Wonder what the "mid-major" polls will look like. A close race for #1.

---
Also, looks like Yale filled out their open date for next season with Georgetown. Too bad! I was really hoping CCSU would get to visit the Bowl. Hopefully we can work something out, but Yale looks booked for years :(

Any chance we could see CCSU's future football schedules? We need to get more game vs. scholly/eqiv programs. One game a year is probably not enough to make a case for an at-large bid to the playoffs - we need 2-3 big OOC games and just one "mid-major."
