and scott gray's tuesday commentary on WTIC...

Tuesday, September12th 2006 - Sports Commentary

The first time Jeff McInerny officially opened his mouth in his capacity as the head football coach at Central Connecticut State University his Connecticut roots showed. After gigs at the University of Rhode Island and North Dakota State he was all nutmeg enthusiasm and if someone had cut him he would have bled Blue Devil Blue. It was enthusiasm that could only be contagious. A seven and four record and a share of the Northeast Conference Championship in his maiden voyage at the helm of the Devils grid machine only enhanced the feeling that this guy was the right fit in New Britain and the players were buying into it. The Blue Devils won their opener this season and vaulted into The Sporting News mid major top ten, but even the true believers had to wonder how long the stay there would be when the Devils came back from Georgia with a one and one record following their first loss of the season. We'll never know. For the first time in a quarter of a century Central Connecticut football is two and oh. For the first time in a decade Georgia Southern lost it's home opener. The Blue Devils served a bit of national notice on Saturday with a 17-13 upset of the thirteenth ranked team in division 1-AA behind Northeast Conference Player of the Week performances from senior running back Justise Hairston, who ran for a hundred and six yards while churning up a hundred and fifty five of the all purpose variety, and junior linebacker Chris Stimmel, who had a team high twelve tackles and his first career interception. The signs are all positive for the regeneration of Blue Devils football under McInerny with sophomore quarterback Aubrey Norris accounting for two touchdowns in the biggest win in school history, running for one, passing for another, while freshman kicker Ryan Heeley contributed to the win with his first career field goal , a twenty five yarder. While no one will call a four point win dominant, no one can call it a fluke. This wasn't one of those "pull out a late lead and hold on for dear life" numbers. The Blue Devils only trailed in this game, against a six time 1-AA national champion, for a total of two minutes and thirteen seconds with a stellar effort that included no turnovers while forcing three. That's the first statistic any football coach will point to. Three on the plus side, they'll always tell you, should translate to a victory. In the second half alone the Blue Devils forced four punts, a fumble and a turnover on downs on six Georgia Southern possessions, only one of those possessions going for more than fourteen yards and lasting more than six plays. Did I mention McInerny, the kid from South Windsor, was a defensive specialist at his previous stops? The Blue Devils visit Southern Connecticut Friday night looking for their first three and oh start in more than thirty years. There's a new football storm brewing in Connecticut and this one's coming from the Central portion of the state. Just ask Jeff McInerny. He'd be more than happy to enthusiastically tell you all about it. Just don't cut him. Unless you don't mind the sight of blue blood. With a comment from the sports world, I'm Scott Gray.
