NEW BRITAIN-When the biggest win in the school's football history isn't the primary topic of discussion, it's a safe bet the team has been able to refocus.

Central Connecticut is coming off a monumental win at Georgia Southern that quite literally has changed its conference's image across the nation and given the Blue Devils a new place on the national landscape. CCSU coach Jeff McInerney knows that some of that respect, rightly or wrongly, will be taken away if the Blue Devils fall this Friday night at Southern Connecticut. "When I got on the bus (at Georgia Southern) I started thinking about Southern Connecticut," he said. "I just don't want a letdown. I was fearful of that... We just went through a 15-round fight and it's tough to go through back-to-back fights. Notre Dame has to do it all the time. We have to be mentally ready. Hopefully we have them prepared."

From what he's seen from his team this week, McInerney believes the Blue Devils have some more fight in them. "This team has great senior leadership," he said. "It's hard for them to get rattled. They've been very consistent for me. When they go out for practice they're very consistent. As a coach, you know what you're going to get. You always fear you're going to take someone for granted but I haven't seen any signs of that from this team. We just keep chopping wood. That's our motto."

McInerney had an idea his team would be able to get back to work this week when he saw how they behaved after getting the biggest win a team in that uniform ever had.
"They don't get too high, either," he said. "When we beat Georgia Southern we just said 'O.K., we won, we did it right and what we were supposed to. They stayed humble. They weren't running around screaming. They knew they had done something good, but I don't know if they understood."

When asked if his players fully appreciated the magnitude of Saturday night's victory over the Eagles, McInerney gave a quick, honest reply. "No, I don't think so, and that's a good thing," he said. "We have a good bunch of kids... They seem very humble. They don't seem to have changed."

That could be as much because of what the Blue Devils are facing off the field as it is on it. "This is the hard part of the year in college football," he said. "The daily challenge that an 18-22-year old has (during the school year) are many. There's family challenges and money challenges. There's classroom challenges. This is when it starts to be drudgery. From game three to game eight is drudgery. The newness wears off and you're in the meat and potatoes of the season." The second game went very well for Central Connecticut. The chore on Friday night will be to make game three just as successful.

If Central Connecticut is going to get to a postseason game, it can't spend too long enjoying a single victory, no matter how special it was. That's why Georgia Southern is no longer the topic of discussion in New Britain. The main word being used in New Britain now is "Owls."
