Subject: MBB Asst quits!

It looks like Howie struck out on picking up this Asst caoch. I wonder if he can pick up someone mid-season?

First-year assistant coach Gary Sirois quit.

"The travel, schedule, late hours and requirements were more demanding than I thought," he said.

Sirois, who is married and has three kids, said he needed to spend more time with his family. Sirois was the women's coach the past two seasons at St. Joseph in West Hartford.

"An assistant needs to be 100 percent committed to doing what needs to be done," he said. "And I realized I couldn't do that. The only thing I do regret is the timing of the decision."

Until a replacement is named, Dickenman will have assistants Steve Curran and Chris Sparks and senior staff supervisor Victor Payne on the bench. ... The victory at St. Francis completed a 3-2 trip, the Blue Devils' longest since a seven-game trip in 2000-01.

Too bad. I noticed his name wasn't in the Media Notes and he wasn't on the bench for the SFNY game, but he was still on the website. Anyway, looks like the other 2 guys are doing fine and I doubt he was heavily involved in recruiting.

Speaking of recruiting. Any word on visits to the campus or possible signings?

It seems weird that a first year assistant would leave mid-season to spend more time with the kids. There must be more here than meets the eye. Of course, his background (two years as the women's coach at D-III St. Joseph's College in West Hartford where his highlight was making it to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament and two years as a women's assistant at Springfield College) is limited so the hiring itself is highly questionable.

Perhaps further review of his credentials revealed something more than him just being too much of a homebody to stick it out for another three months. It's strange that this got swept under the rug so quickly. If this had happened at UConn, there would've been a full scale investigation.

I wonder what he did before deciding relatively late in life to become a D-III women's assistant bball coach.

Following up on the credentials, last year Sirois' St. Joseph's College women's team finished 12-13 and lost by 15 in the first round of the GNAC tourney. The previous year, they finished 11-13 and lost by 14 in the first round of the GNAC tourney. The year before Sirois arrived, the same team was 15-10. Someone please tell me how this guy deserved to be hired as a D-I men's assistant.

[> Kelvin Jefferson would be a nice candidate -- ktuck911, 11:55:00 12/30/05 Fri

He's an assistant to Coach Pikiell at Stony Brook now... plus he has blood ties to your team in Lenny Jefferson... I was a childhood neighbor of Kelvin and I'm sure he'd be a more than adequate option for you guys even though this is his first year as an assistant at Stony Brook... peep his profile on their site (link: http://goseawolves.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/jefferson_kelvin00.html )...

The thing I like about Kelvin's bio is that not only is he a fellow Norwalk, CT native, but "A tireless recruiter who is well connected, Jefferson is a regular at several basketball camps and clinics throughout the Northeast." Sounds like a coach that is hungry and eager to prove himself, which would be something any college basketball program on the rise could use... CCSU would benefit from him IMO...

My two cents....

Have a Happy New Year folks!

Kelvin Jefferson would make a nice addition...after Lenny graduates, don't want any conflict of interest.

Will there be a press release on this?

There was a quick blurb about this in the Courant and I think Howie spoke about it in the radio pregame before Delaware. Sounds like a good pick. He is a former CCSU staff member and shouldn't need much time to get up to speed.

----
From Univ. of Bridgeport site:

Assistant Coach Kevin Papacs
Second Season

Papacs is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Purple Knights. In addition to his duties as the varsity assistant coach, Papacs also serves as the assistant director of the Wheeler Recreation Center, located on the UB campus.

As the varsity assistant, Papacs assists in scouting opponents, coordinating practice schedules and working one-on-one with the players in individual drills. Prior to his arrival at the University of Bridgeport, Papacs served as the Senior Staff Supervisor at Division I CCSU under head coach Howie Dickerman from 2000-03. In that position, Papacs was responsible for the coordination of team travel and assisted with the Blue Devil’s scouting operations.

Papacs was also the co-director of the Howie Dickerman Basketball School during the summers, which drew over 150 basketball players ranging from eight to 15 years of age. In addition to his duties with the varsity basketball team, Papacs was CCSU’s Director of Intramurals and Recreation.
