Subject: Is Manhattan a much better program?

Phil Martelli Jr. has taken an assistant coaching position under Bobby Gonzalez at Manhattan after 2 years at CCSU.

Now I know assistant coaches at lower profile schools such as Central, often don't stay long as better opportunities arise in higher profile conferences. Former Central coaches have gone on to bigger and better opportunities (Pikell to asst. @ GW then head coach @ SBU; Pat Sellers to UMass then UConn; Chris Casey asst. @ St. John's). In these cases, the move was a well deserved "step up" in the college basketball coaching profession.

So is a move to a MAAC team a much better professional opportunity? Yes, it is a job in NYC and the Jaspers have won an NCAA game, but it seems somewhat lateral to me. I don't know, but I would think a his next move would have been to an A-10, BE, or CUSA team. IMO - Until the NEC can win some quality OOC games and gain some real respect, CCSU's conference affiliation will be an albatross around our necks.

In any case good luck to Phil in the future, and I'm sure the next guy will be a quality coach too.

maybe it was more $$$$.anyway, the big loss is Rob Robinson backing out. loosing a forward really hurts.

I guess its good to have Ron R back out now and give howie a chance to figgure out if he should get someone to replace him; rather than dealing with a bombshell early next season.
I dont think that there is anyone left to recruit (big men anyway)

Sobers is back in...... lets see the game he brings for next season. If Howie keeps that guard that was reported instead of tanking him and looking for a for a forward/center, what will the lineup look like?

PG - Tristan Blackwood
F - Jason Hick
SF - Demario
SG - Javier
F/C - ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Good luck to Anthony at SHU.... It looks like SH is getting some horsepower coaches to pull out some better play for next season. If SHU does not make it to the NEC conference.. Bike is out.. and so is Anthony.

Howie must be scratching his head on what to next...

The PF/C position has to be filled by MIddleton, Sobers, or Ingo. Personally, I would feel comfortable with the lineup as follows:

PG: Tristan
SG: Jefferson
SF: Demario
PF: Obie
C: Middleton

We were going to be a perimeter based offense with Robinson here anyway. From everything I heard, he was not a scorer. He was simply a good defender and rebounder. At least with Middleton we can get some blocked shots, even if he doesn't score. I also think Tristan could be a breakout player (similar to Demario). Tristan, demario, obie, and Lenny gives us 4 scorers on the floor, and Middleton (hopefully) can block some shots.

Wow I didn't expect a Courant article the next day with all those details. I had read about Phil's announcement at Manhhattan from other sources, but Latina moving to SHU was a shock. And the return of Sobers and release of Robinson is quite a twist.

Agreed that it is much better to take care of this during the summer, but they have their hands filled - still recruiting, hiring 2 asst. coaches, and working on the upcoming schedule.

Not trying to diss CCSU basketball, BUT, dag! As big as the school, what's with the recruiting issues? You guys should be getting AT LEAST one complete player every 4 years... Ever since the Corsley Edwards and Ron Robinson days the recruiting to doesn't seem to be as good... What's going on?

Remember a few years back, howie hada bunch of players bail out early in the season. I think it takes time for a program to recover fom that. I think howie laerned from that and has had the rosters full for a few years now.

Let's be fair. These are HS seniors we're talking about. Most kids don't know what they want to do yet at this age (I sure didn't), so tranfers are always going to happen. Its not great to lose players, but college is a big decision and everyone has to be happy with their choice and athletics is just a part of it. You just hope you can weed out bad attitudes before they sour a team. But if a kid is homesick, injured, struggling academicly, or is just not happy its OK to move on.

I think we've done fine in recruiting - Ktuck you may be reading too much from "couch coaches" who don't know squat. Obie was highly regarded out HS in NJ. Tristan was a big recruit from Canada and will only improve. Hickenbottom will be a solid frontcourt player from Phily. Chiera is challanging many school 3pt records. D.A. has all-NEC 1st team potential. Lenny is a nice local suprise in recruiting. Plus our big men are good projects in Ingo and Middleton.

Recruiting is a very competative process and we have been doing just fine getting great recruits at our level. Howie has done it in the Big East and the NEC, so I think he knows what is going on out there more than any of us do. My only issue is if CCSU was in a slightly higher profile conference (the MAAC or AE) we could do even better getting kids on the edge of the A-10 or Big East talent who could become superstars at a mid-major level.

No disrespect to the Lenny's (representing my hometown of Norwalk, CT) or Obie's or Hick's or Tristan's or Chiera's... I'm just saying CCSU is a big school compared to a lot of programs that go up against... which, to me would somehow seem to mean they'd maybe have a larger fan base as far as basketball's concerned... I feel they should be recruiting just as good if not better talent than the MAAC schools... they should be closer to recruiting on the level of MAC or A-10... The pieces seem to be in place for that to happen, but for some reason it's not... which kinda makes you wonder why all the assistants seem to be abandoning ship...

I am sure that howie has a rep in D1 for developing his asst. coaches and they get picked up. "Abandoning ship" seems a bit strong. Its hard to keep pace with these private schools deep pockets. The q picked up 3 Juco players in one shot.. pretty amazing..

Right larry jucos, not a big deal. However I think Q's transfer from Tenn. may be a much bigger pickup. Anyway its not the coaching, its the conference. How could any coach steal MAC or A-10 talent to play in the one bid NEC and in a 3,000 seat high school gym? Please, we do great with what we have. I mean even the Ivys and Patroit League can only get a certain type of player due to its academic requirements. Yes, we could do better, but it requires more than wishfull thinking. Again the model that I cite is Western KY or So. Ill. These are second tier schools in their respective states, but they are attempting to be a high mid-majors.

Its a nice thought that we are a big public school with peers like UConn, UMass or even Buffalo, but its just not true. I mean were not even as big as the "directional schools" like Central Florida or Middle Tenn. State. We have nowhere near the budget or facilities of those schools. And yes we have a loyal, but small fan base. Again, lets hope the new president makes athletics one of his priorities and we get some increase in funding. IMO nothing short of a new facility and conference change will allow CCSU to grow.

I totally agree with ur last statment. As for the Tenn xfer, one great player does not make a champoinship. (but if u add 3 decent xfers....) Looks like desantes is looking for some short term success... We will see on that one.. In other news, Darshan Luckey is getting an agent and declaring for the draft. I dont think he will get picked up, but he will do well overseas... now he was/is a good smooth player. I loved watching him.

Who said the assistants abandoned ship? How do you know they weren't asked to leave?

And before we start striving to be QU and sign transfers, lets remember they haven't made the tournament the last two seasons and are probably on the verge of firing their coach after another crappy season.

The pieces seem to be in place for that to happen, but for some reason it's not...

What does that mean? Define pieces.
