Subject: Central, Southern Resuming Football Rivalry In 2006

I think this is a very good idea. There is such a big history and rivalry it seems like a no-brainer. CCSU should continu to play one "up" game vs an A-10 or PL team and play SCSU every year; the rest of the games vs. other "mid-majors". Southern has a very good football history and this should be a fun match-up.

Finally finding a mutual opening, Central Connecticut and Southern Connecticut will meet again in football for the first time since 1999. The two schools will play Sept. 16, 2006, probably at Southern, with the 2007 game at Central.

"We're longtime rivals and so close," Central coach Tom Masella said. "Why travel five hours to play somebody? It's a no-brainer. There's no cost other than a bus and both teams get good crowds and create interest."

To make room, Central will most likely drop Rhode Island.

"When we went into conferences, we had a problem getting together," Southern coach Rich Cavanaugh said. "Conferences don't consider traditional rivals. Now our open dates coincide. Hopefully we'll attract decent crowds. It was a big rivalry before and I don't see why it wouldn't continue to be."

Central is in I-AA with need-based scholarships and is a member of the Northeast Conference. Southern is Division II with full scholarships and belongs to the Northeast-10.

Southern holds a 35-15 lead in the series, which began in 1949.

Central won the 1999 game, 30-23. in The winner gets the Governor's Cup, which Central has had in its coaches' office since that victory.

"We use it for players' mail," Masella said.

Its good to see the FBall team get that game scheduled with an instate team besides SHU in conf. Its just too bad that the BBall team cant get an OCC team on the schedule (Hartford, Yale, Fairfield) . It Has been far too long since Central has played them instate.
I am sure that its somthing Howie tries to do every year.

This is great to see. I really miss the Uconn/Yale, New Haven/Southern CT wars. i hope this game can pick up some juice.

Any chance you think we will see either CCSU, SHU, or Southern playing in the Yale Bowl. I think one of those games would be great for Connecticut college football

Now this is really great rivalry! Yale/UConn at the Bowl is OK, but this trip to West Point is well worth the game and scenery. One of the top 10 places to see a sporting event in America and tons of US history.

Yale will play Army in football in 2010 and 2012, the schools announced Tuesday. Both games will be in West Point, N.Y.

The series began 112 years ago, but the teams last played in 1996 at West Point with Army winning, 39-13. Yale defeated Army 28-0 in the first meeting in 1893 and leads the series, 21-16-8.

The Bulldogs will visit Michie Stadium Oct. 2, 2010, and Sept. 29, 2012.

The rivalry featured three Heisman Trophy winners - Yale's Clint Frank and Larry Kelley and Army's Glenn Davis.

It is possible Army will play at Yale later. Army last played at Yale Bowl in 1988, winning 33-18.
