Anyone else suprised that Howie basically only used 6 guys (a couple other guys got minutes, but not above 10 minutes)? I hope Sobers gets more minutes in the upcoming games. He can block shots and defend very well. He could be very important in a matchup against FD (every other game as well). If he can stay healthy and play some more minutes, it would allow us to match him up against the opposing teams best inside player, which would allow Obie to stay out of foul trouble (we need him to score). I think Blackwood is going to be VERY good in the next couple of seasons, but I would love to see us have Sobers, Obie, and Pittman in the frontcourt, with Lenny and Anderson in the backcourt for a portion of each game.

Maybe some of you watch more games in person than me, but I'm not sure what you all see as "potential" from the frontcourt. I know many of you are high on Sobers (and I am too), but to date Hickenbottem has outperformed him. I would love to see them both raise their game and be ready to make an big impact next year. With our deep group of guards, plus Obie and Rich, its clear Howie is going to finish this season playing with a 3 guards lineup. This is the NEC and its a guard league anyway. The frontcourt is not as deep as our backcourt, so we must play to our strenghth.

First, we all agree Obie is a stud. He's an all-conference player and appears to be the heart and soul of the team.

Pittman has the talent, but lacks the size of many opposing forwards. As a senior he is experienced and has had some stellar games, but he has not taken charge as past seniors (Robinson, Edwards, or Mickens) have done.

Hickenbottem is a freshman. While some have commented he lacks the "talent" or whatever, I disagree. He has started, played well and is very agressive. His numbers are very respectable. Yes, he has made a few "freshman mistakes" but I see this kid developing into a solid starter over his career at CCSU.

Sobers has been limited by injury. I know he is highly regarded, but in my opinion he is not agrressive enough and he has not outplayed any of our forwards in a game yet.

Brooks has seen limited action and I can only assume that is because he hasn't grasped the offense in practice, or something along those lines. This is the one player that I think Howie should find a little more time for. He has shown some skills in very limited action. He adds height, can shoot and is a JC transfer so I expect a little more from him in this season.

Ingo is a tree. He has height and can be an inside presence in the NEC with some work, but he is very new to the game with limited HS/JC experience. He has gotten just enough time this year to get his feet wet and I would expect him to improve, but he'll always be a role player off the bench.

The biggest disapointment has to be team excution. I like the lineup and even our rotation, but in almost every case (expect Jefferson) our returning players have lower shooting % than last year. Plus, our defense hasn't been at it normal CCSU standard, but that may be due, in part, to a lack of height.

There is a big difference in potential between Sobers and Hickenbottom. Hickenbottom is tough, but Sobers has the potential to be a great defensive player. If Sobers could ever get healthy and play big minutes, he could easily get about 2.5 blocks a game. Having a shotblocker is a great asset for a team. Hickenbottom will never be a shotblocker. He is a defensive power forward trapped in a SG/SF body. Obie is an exception because he is a monster physically, and even he doesn't block shots. If Hickenbottom can bulk up, he can certainly become like Obie, but I dont see that happening for a couple seasons at least. Obie was big and strong the minute he got here.

My whole point is that this team has no inside defensive presence. If we play a team that has one (monmouth, FDU), we are going to need a ton of 3 pointers to win. Teams are not scared to drive to the basket on us because we have no inside defensive threat. Blocked shots also spark fast breaks. I understand that a 3 guard lineup fits our team right now, but subbing a healthy Sobers in for Pittman or Obie would be huge. Imagine Sobers blocking a shot, and our 3 guard lineup getting out and running on a fast break. It is just unrealistic to expect that a frontcourt of Obie, Pittman, and Hickenbottom (all of whom are usually a c ouple inches shorter than who their guarding) can handle a team with size.

It is alot to expect that we will be shooting great from 3 point land every game, which is what we'll need to do to win the conference tournament. We can't even win two-in-a-row against the better teams in the conference as it is.
