Subject: web broadcast - need your help

the department is going to utilize a different web broadcaster for Sunday's game at 2:00 p.m. Please listen and post feedback here ASAP on Sunday. Thanks. P.S> You will need to download Quicktime to listen (it works on both PC and Macs): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/

I listened for a few min. before I left for the game. It sounded a little better than the previous, but it was the quiet pre-game. I think that the quality of the internet broadcast goes down when the outside noise goes up. The Broadcasting rate was at 9KB instead of the 8-Sub 8KB that sports juice normally gives. Not sure how the game audio was.

I had to look into this where I work for video conferencing. A radio remote will be different, but it looks to be a similar setup. Interesting challenge.

there are a few ways to go about this.

entry level-- A boosted up PC running windows server and Windows media server. This would be a dedicated machine that would only do streaming. The biggest cost would be the re-orccuring line usage (digital) and bandwidth cost. But If you can jump on the schools bandwidth, that would be optimal, but that is a political( business ) issue.
I would figgure the hardware cost would be about 1200-1500 and the server software would be about 600$ ( thats what I pay for a 2003 server license).
I would definately house both Digital and Analog Modems on the server end. ( not sure what kind of telephony the radio remote has on it. )
I would guess you could squeeze 3 years out of a system like this...

Mid-level Server would be around 3500+ for the hardware Figgure on 4-5 years out of a system like this. And you need a place to store said server.

High end - Figgure on 12000$

Even the low-end is almost out of the possible price range, especially considering you can't count on the school network to always be operational and any problems after 4:30 have to wait until the next day, never mind the problems on a weekend which wait until Monday. Same reason the website went off-site, ITS can't support it. Not to mention, having someone around in the office to monitor if something goes wrong is not possible with a tiny staff. Good idea though, something the dept. has already looked into but just can't have anough support on-site.

thats too bad that you cant muster the IT support. This is really a solvable problem and it looks like you have the most expensive part (broadband) inplace. I guess thats a large difference between Corporate IT world (what I do) and the Educational IT world. It does not matter when an issue pops up, it gets looked at ASAP.
anyway, If there is any volunteer stuff you need help, just let me know... I'd love to help any way I can.

I think a solution may have been found with Stretch Internet, an affordable company that provided a GREAT broadcast on Sunday. It's done differently than SportsJuice and the feedback has been great so far (so i hear!)...they also provide the technical support that needed at gametime, something not available on campus.....

Of course, a little birdie told me all this.
