Central Connecticut Basketball Games to Support “Cell Phones for Soldiers”

New Britain, CT (January 13, 2005) - The Central Connecticut athletics department has partnered with Cell Phones For Soldiers as a cell phone collection center during several of its upcoming home men’s and women’s basketball games. Cell Phones For Soldiers was started by two Massachusetts teenagers to help buy calling cards to send to our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Started in April of 2004, Cell Phones For Soldiers has raised more than $300,000.00 and has sent more than 10,000 prepaid calling cards to our troops. Fans who donate a used cell phone, cash, or a calling card at a select men’s or women’s basketball game will receive one free admission to that game.

The Blue Devils have five home games in the next two weeks, and fans who bring a used cell phone, cash, or a calling card to donate to Cell Phones for Soldiers will receive one free ticket to that selected game. The cash or calling card donation must be at least $7, the price of one ticket. The dates are as follows:

January 15 Women’s Basketball vs. Robert Morris 12:00 p.m.

January 15 Men’s Basketball vs. Robert Morris 4:00 p.m.

January 18 Women’s Basketball vs. Dartmouth 7:00 p.m.

January 22 Women’s Basketball vs. Long Island 1:00 p.m.

January 22 Men’s Basketball vs. Long Island 4:00 p.m.

The Cell Phones for Soldiers program was started by 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother Robbie of Norwell, MA. After hearing a news report about a local soldier who ran up a massive phone bill calling home from Iraq, they decided they wanted to do something to help. Brittany and Robbie donated their snack money and went to the bank to open an account. The South Shore Savings Bank in Norwell donated $500.00 to help them get started. Their goal is to help our soldiers serving overseas call home.

Brittany and her father will be in attendance at the men’s game on Saturday, January 22 in New Britain vs. Long Island at 4:00 p.m. and will appear on television and radio to help promote her cause.

Brittany and Robbie hope to provide as many soldiers as possible with prepaid calling cards for now, with an ultimate goal of providing banks of cell, satellite, or VOIP communications. They have already distributed calling cards to soldiers in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

The program will accept any make or model cell phone. Please drop off the cell phone with the attached battery only. The cell phones are recycled for cash to purchase calling cards.
