I just noticed that only 3 NEC teams (CCSU, SHU, and SBU) are playing a 10 game schedule, the other 5 teams are playing 11 games. Both CCSU and SHU are playing Marist and St. Peter's as 2 of their 3 OOC games; Central is also playing URI and SHU is playing Iona. I know both teams have new coaches - is that the reason?

Also, I've read rumors on message boards that UA and SBU are looking to go full scholly (e.g. A-10) after their NEC contract is up. Looking at the UA football schedule this season (Hofstra, Fordham, Brown, and Lehigh) I now actually believe it. Also, every NEC team, with the exception of Albany, has scheduled at least one MAAC team this season. Clearly, there is a difference between A-10, Patriot, and Ivy League I-AA football and the NEC and MAAC, but UA appears to be “scheduling up” in preparation of something.

What is the future of football at CCSU and in the NEC (more scholarships, etc.)? Will UA and SBU stick around for a few more seasons? What is going on with the MAAC schools, will they join the NEC, stay independent, or drop football?

I don't know much but this I can tell you, all five remaining MAAC football schools declined invitations to join the NEC in football only. Also, I believe the 10-game schedules are just a coincidence, there aren't that many teams out there to play, unless you play up a level which didn't work the last two seasons for CCSU. As for the future of UA and SBU, I think that remains to be seen, but it would be easier for them to move up because their only affiliation with the NEC is in football.

Albany is getting ready to announce plans for a new 25 million dollar stadium that seats 20-25k per game. SBU already has one. There is no reason to doubt their seriousness in moving up. Its going to happen by 2006 or 2007...full scholarship football. I would think CCSU would not be that far behind.

Insider - "Also, I believe the 10-game schedules are just a coincidence, there aren't that many teams out there to play, unless you play up a level which didn't work the last two seasons for CCSU."

You're right there aren't many 1-aa teams to play and yes we got thumpped the last 2 seasons playing those A-10 teams, but don't they write us a big check for those games? I hate to see us lose by a 70-7 score, but if we could play close (within 21 points) with an A-10 team isn't worth the payoff? I know it looks bad, but sometimes you gotta pay the bills, right?
