two other dandidates did not turn down the job...only one other was offered, another took his name out of the mix before the interviews took place (and likely was a distant third in the running)...He may have been the second person to be offered the job, but Masella was the top pick of many of the people within the athletic department.

Your right, I misread that part of the article. So that's very good news for us. He sounds like a great pick for CCSU with a good resume and connection to football in the Northeast. I hope all is getting better within the administration and the athletic department.

But clearly the new coach is taking over a struggling program, one that has just five winning seasons in the past 33 years. Not to mention this is non-scholarship I-AA football, so its going to be hard for him to establish a winner. I really would have thought that UMass would have been a better situation (A-10) for a coach, but I guess its not. So is a coaching job at Central really improving in stature compared with UMass?

The decision not stay at UMass was not his, he has not been offered that job and can't afford to wait and see if they will offer it him. Eventually, it comes down to having a job vs. being unemployed. Obviously UMass is a better job, but being the head coach at CCSU is not a bad move either.
