Wow, that is great news! I was just thinking about the spring signing period and OOC scheduling. I've seen reports from other teams on signees and non-conference games, so I am really looking forward to hear what CCSU is doing.

From Tom Yantz in Tuesday's Courant...

Central Signs 7-3 Recruit
April 27, 2004
Staff And Wire Reports

Jermaine Middleton, a 7-foot-3 center from South Kent School, signed a national letter of intent Monday with Central Connecticut.

"I know Coach [Howie] Dickenman was an assistant before for Jim Calhoun at UConn and has had a long history of helping out big men," Middleton said.

Middleton says he weighs 230.

"He's long and thin," Dickenman said. "He'll be on the reverse Atkins diet."

Middleton averaged 13 points and nine rebounds as a postgraduate at South Kent. He also visited the University of Washington and St. John's.

"Central's a small school; the environment is good," Middleton said. "I think I can play, do well there and contribute in [the Northeast Conference]. And I don't have to redshirt a season."

Middleton said he needs to get stronger and play more aggressively on defense.

"The big thing for us is he's a player with upside," Dickenman said. "He has good hands and a sky hook with range. He certainly has to work and get stronger - his bed will be in the weight room - but he's 7-3."

Central needs help inside with the graduation of NEC Player of the Year Ron Robinson.

Central plays NCAA champion UConn next season. The game will be a reunion for Middleton and Huskies guard Marcus Williams, teammates for three years at Crenshaw High in Los Angeles.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Marcus," Middleton said.

Any Pictures of this guy? I would like to see how he is built. Can he play with a widebody? or will he get shoved around in the low post?

needs to put on some weight according to Howie...is a legit 7-3 though, no exaggerating...some have said he has a hook shot that can't miss.

He appears to be built like former Blue Devil and one time NCAA freshman shot block record holder Keith Closs. Both were originally from Southern California too, right? Sounds like this kid has his work cut out for him in the weight room, but over 4 years he could become something special. He had interest from PAC-10 and Big East schools, so he must have the potential. Now I really don't worry that we lost out on that kid to UMass. The recruiting CCSU is able to pull off is pretty amazing considering this is still a relatively small school in a lower ranked conference. It really says a lot about the school and its staff.

Anyway, I think he should have an immediate impact in the NEC as a shot blocker and he should be able to score some points in the paint. It will be real interesting how he fairs against UConn (good thing Oakfor will be in the NBA)and some bigger non-conference teams, especially early in his career. He should be able to take some of the inside pressure off Pittman and allow Rich to really be an impact player next season. Although the team loses Robinson, they gain 2 solid recruits to a young team that made the NEC finals. Next season is already looking good! Insider - to the extent you can, keep us updated on scheduling.

I remember Closs.... He got shoved around pretty good, but then Closs was no where near 230 Lbs... Is this kid really 230?
