Brown Trout Fishing Like the Old Days!
This is more like it. Lots of alewives moving onshore, and the browns are really chowing down on them. In
the past few trips, both Fish Doctor boats have limited or nearly limited out on browns, rainbows, cohos,
and lakers. Yesterday, May 12, our two boats combined for 18 browns up to 8+ lbs., 3 rainbows, a laker, and
a chinook. Under cloudy skies, rain, and a north wind, the browns were biting until 1:00 PM, even though
the water in the area was crystal clear. If the weather had been sunny, the bite would have ended around
7:00 AM. A 12 lb. coho and a few kings up to 19 lbs. were taken over deeper water in the same vicinity.
The brown trout action is in 10'-25' of water from Nine Mile Point to Four Mile Point(two miles east of
Oswego). Brown trout fishing in Oswego Harbor and Cemetery Bay died a few days ago, but there has been
some decent brown trout fishing west of Oswego at Ford Shoals near the green "can". Oswego Harbor is
loaded with sheepheads if you're interested. They are lots of fun to catch and not bad eating.
Stickbaits and flutterspoons have both been taking browns, with black and silver the hottest color for us on
5/12. In the clear water, Umpqua fluorocarbon leaders have been giving us an edge on the line shy browns.
We're using custom built Fish Doctor noodle rods we build ourselves, either Penn 855 line counter reels or
Penn 965 Internationals, and 8 lb. test Maxima Fibre Glo monofilament. Our favorite planer board releases
are customized Jolly releases with fluorescent tubing over the wire for visibility. We use Offshore releases
on 6lb. balls for shallow trolling.
If you've been itching to do some brown trout trolling on eastern Lake Ontario, now is the time.
See you on the water,
Capt. Ernie Lantiegne
