King Salmon Alert - 5/23/01
What a surprise, the best May fishing for chinook salmon wešve ever seen! Thatšs the story this
past week aboard the Fish Doctor. The salmon fishing peaked for us by Friday, 5/18 when we
went 10 for 13 on kings, with all but three of the hits coming on Howie Flies and dodgers.
The hotg dodger/fly combos were silver glo dodgers and green krinkle Howie Flies in the sun,
and chrome/silver dodgers trailed by aqua blue Howie Flies in the overcast. We also took a
couple of browns on the dodger/flies as deep as 80 feet.
Recent south winds have cooled shoreline temps to as low as 40 degrees off Nine Mile, so you
can expect browns to be scatterred until warmer shoreline temperatures set up again.
Good News, Bad News - Hot for Browns Shallow, Kings Deep Cooled Off by Heavy South Winds...,
Surface Temps Plummet
Whew!! what a week it has been on the lake. We have been having super
brown trout fishing near shore early in the morning. Stickbaits off the
boards and flutterspoons off the riggers have been the ticket for us.
In the crystal clear water we have been working lately fluorocarbon
leader has been the key to taking browns. After a lot of trial and error we
have finally found a fluorocarbon line that holds up to the abuse we
give it. Umpqua fluorocarbon is definitely our choice.
We recently filmed a TV show with Rick and John of Northeast Great Outdoors.
After a morning of great brown fishing we slid offshore to take a look
for kings that have been caught with more regularity than the norm for
this time of year. We committed ourselves and put out straight king salmon
gear. It wasn't long and we were rewarded with that screaming sound of a
hot king on an NK that was down 70 over 110'. We kept fishing and took
two more kings one on a dodger/Howie Fly and another on an NK. That was
tuesday and it was the same on wed. and thurs. with kings up to 24 lbs.
We were 5 for 6 on kings on 5/17 with half the hits coming on dodger/Howie flies and half on NK28s. All of
the kings have been stuffed with alewives. The kings are in great shape, and awesome eating. Looks like
the salmon season has started three months early this year!! During the week, king salmon fishing peaked
for us on 5/18 when we went 10 for 13 on kings with 10 of the hits coming on dodgers and Howie flies.
The bad news..., heavy south winds on May 21 and 22 destroyed warmer shoreline temps with surface water
temperature on 5/23 plummeting to 40 degrees off Nine Mile Point. Look for scattered browns and kings
until westerly winds rebuild warm surface temps near shore.
If you're having trouble locating Howie Flies or the hot #0 dodgers in Silver Glo, white pearl, or
chrome/silver prism, contact us at .
See you on the water,
Capt. Randy Lantiegne
