Chilly Surface Temps Extend Nearshore Brown Trout Fishing
We've got good news and bad news! Heavy south winds have chilled
nearshore surface temps and brown trout fishing, but the cooler than
normal water temps in the low 40's will extend our shallow water brown
trout fishing well into June.
Heavy south winds have lowered surface water temperatures near shore,
concentrating brown trout near the Nine Mile Point warm water discharge
and and Oswego Harbor. There have also been some reports of scatterred
browns and steelhead being taken offshore, but not with enough
regularity to interest most anglers.
Brown Trout - Fishing has been slow at Nine MIle, but lots of alewives
have poured into the Oswego Harbor area along with some nice browns.
Between our two boats, the Fish Doctor and the Alaskan, we boated 10
browns up to 9 lbs. near the harbor on Friday, 5/25, but fishing over
the weekend was a little tougher because of all the holiday fishing
pressure. This week, though, when all the weekend boats are gone,
watch out Mr. Brown Trout!
We're expecting a change in the weather on Tuesday, May 29, with winds
switching to the West and blowing up to 25 MPH with 3-5 foot waves.
This is just what we need to muddy up the shallows, push some warm
water along shore, and concentrate baitfish and brown trout producing
more good fishing
Steelhead and Salmon - It's also what we need to stabilize our offshore
fishing for chinooks and steelhead. It was just 10 days ago that we
went 10 for 13 on kings from 8-19 lbs., and we're looking for more of
the same.
If we can get 2-3 days of west winds, we'll see some offshore thermal
bars start to set up, which should produce some of the first really
good steelhead fishing this spring.
Walleyes! Wow, a group of four PA anglers, including two experienced
Lake Erie charter captains stayed with us over the weekend, and fished
walleyes. They not only caught walleyes at night, but on Sat., May 26,
right during the day, two of them hooked 12 walleyes vertical jigging
in Oswego Harbor. The largest, a 14 lb. monster, is in our freezer and
headed for the taxidermist's. Now that's a walleye!!
If you're thinking about a Lake Ontario fishing trip, give us a call.
We've still got open dates. If you've ever had a hankering to fish
for king salmon in Lake Ontario, this may be one of the best years ever
with a record abundance of alewives and a record year class of 2 year
old kings.
See you on the water,
Capt. Ernie
