With that many years comming to the river it's a shame you haven't learned to F I S H for salmon.When presented w/ a proper drift there is no need to LIFT salmon.It doesn't seem to make a diff. which type of tackle is used-just try to get a good drift(same speed as current) and keep your line tight and the slack off the water.I would suggest fishing the faster pocket water as opposed to the deeper pools-fish in the pockets are moving and more apt to bite than those resting in the pools.GOOD LUCK----BILL
