Having fished a series of Erie Tribs from Cleveland, Ohio East to Dunkirk, NY. late last week on the way back from our Kansas deer hunt, I can attest to the availability of nice numbers of rainbows and steelies in those streams dumping into Lake Erie. We Caught trout in each creek we fished. All week long I have fished Ontario's eastern Basin streams with equally good success. The only discernable difference between the two fisheries that I saw was a perponderance of filthy, muddy water on erie streams as they drain the rich farmlands of Ohio, western Pa, and NY's Cattaraugus County. There was also a CONSIDERABLE difference in average size. Average Erie trout was about 4 to 6 pounds with the largest going 11 lbs. Average Eastern Lake Ontario fish being around nine LBS. with the largest going 17 1/2 lbs. Both are excellent fisheries. Salmon River area streams are virtually deserted throughout the week with only a token number of Bank anglers. Driftboats are doing VERY well taken limits plus on most outings. Quite a few of those have been 15 lb + Trophies. The Sandies (ALL THREE) have nice water levels and produced well all week. Grindstone, Catfish, and Little salmon River all have Browns, Domestic Rainbows, and late run coho. We finally have decent water levels and conditions crowd wise are WIDE OPEN. Best fishing of the fall will be from now to freezeup. Good Fishing. walleyed out!
