I have fly fished throughout the country and beyond. I've made 15 appearences (soon to be 16 fishing the San Juan River) on ESPN Outdoors. I had the pleasurable experience of fly fishing with Captain Davis last spring for a video shoot and 7 years ago in the fall (in which he was a licensed Guide then). It bothers me that a few of the fishing report lines have come to this. Have you taken notice that the only poor propaganda and slander towards Captain Davis is from NOT one person whom has ever drifted the rivers with him in his boat? For those of you looking at this report line for information on where to spend your quality, hard earned money, please remember this as you make your decision. A little coommon sense is all it will take to figure out. I would have zero complaints, nor would I take my valuable time to support Captain Davis if these tasteless remarks had any truth. If a guide is not working hard for you, blowin' down a river and simply collecting YOUR money, or breaking established rules, (especially snagging)... Then I feel this should be reported on such report lines. Captain Davis does not fit into this category- He is a sportsmen and upholds a wonderful relationship with the New York State DEC. Captain Davis would be the first "snagger I ever met who used Orvis and Sage fly rods with Abel fly reels. I also took notice of his pile of approximately one dozen G-Loomis noodle rods. That's some awesome tackle to simply be a lifter! I had the opportunity of meeting an officer on the stream with Captain Davis and I was informed then of his professionalism and respect by the fellow officers he techinacally works "WITH". I fully support "catch-n-release", HOWEVER if a person wants to keep a legally caught fish whether it is with Captain Davis, Another Guide, or amongst fishing with friends> It should be that INDIVIDUALS CHOICE, NOT YOURS. This is why we have well regulated and competent DNR's, Fish Commissions, DEC's, FRO's, ETC. As for "collecting money for a guiding service", you may oughta ask the local public buinesses in your area such as: Motels, Eatery's, Tackle Shops, gas stations, and New York State DEC (e.g. Fishing Licenses). Guides, whether white water rafting, photograghy, hunting, fishing, and so on, help not only the guide, but also the local economy. This is often a forgotten, but important issue. I am slated in the books to fish three days with Captain Davis in the Spring of 2002 and am sure it will be a memorable expedition as in the past.
