It rained all nite long in steelhead country and the local streams responded by greatly increasing their flow volumes and their water temperatures plummeted down to 33 to 34 degrees due to the ice and snow meltwater runoff. Everything North of Pulaski is either jumping it's banks or is about to do so. Lots of floating debris like leaves, grass, straw, sticks, logs and yes, even trees are now making their way to Lake Ontario. The water color ranges from Nestle's Quik to Swiss Miss Instant Cocoa. The Steelies were present in the Extreme lower ends of all area streams and some fish were being taken but the game is now changing rapidly. Unless things cool down substantially and tighten up the extreme runoff it will be tough sledding for all you steelhead rangers this weekend. Yesterday and today we pitched Tony's special recipe HOT PINK BAGS either straight line bottom bouncing or beneath floats with modest results. Low clear water and spooky fish was the apparent problem yesterday as we saw lots of fish while covering the pertinent water but most would not hit for us. We ended up one for five with a chrome/pink sided 10 lb. Boar coming very unwillingly to the net to be captured on film and released by Jon from Jersey. Today fish were no doubt on the move with the huge volume of water and hard to pinpoint as to where they were and the fridgid water temperature had a negative effect on their demeanor. We were a solid one for one on another Chrome boar with pretty pink gill flap and matching swimming stripe who fought like a wild maniac before we photogged and released him. Nice Job by Jon's brother Ernie! If you come up, buy a GAZETTEER ATLAS of NEW YORK at Tony's Salmon Country and look for streams that drain a small watershed area and fish them as they will be the clearest and most debris-free streams to fish. the water is VERY HIGH right now but on the bright side this will be the blast of water that ushers in the major portion of the Spring run of rainbows and steelheads to Eastern Basin/ Tughill Plateau watershed streams. Here they come mouseketeers! Don your waders, strap on your corkers and other Acoutrements, seize your bobbers and bags, string your rods and prepare for Battle. Good Fishing. walleyed out!!
