Magnesium isn't used much in salt water because it corrodes so quickly that it is soon gone. For that reason, people use zinc for seaboats.

In fresh water, which is a poor conductor of electricity, magnesium doesn't corrode so quickly, so it is practicable to use it.

Zinc will still work in fresh water, but magnesium is more effective because it is nearer the lowest point on the galvanic scale.
