Anodes

Salt water - zinc
Fresh water- Magnesium

Its to do with the electrolytic properties of the solvent (water). Pure water (distilled u wouldn't need 'owt).

The purer the water the higher the element is in the periodic table for the anode.

A purist would also put an anode on the rudder, an ensure that the same is properly earthed to the hull.

Note anodes can be also eroded by poor earthing of boats when connected to land power. This could mean next doors boat with poor electrical isolation can erode your anodes !!!!!!!!!!
